<p>Most of us here are far too young to remember this, but when Dr Martin Luther King, Jr died he was extremely unpopular in the mainstream US media &#8211; primarily because of his stance on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War"> war</a>. This sermon could have been delivered this morning and still have been relevant.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m of course not satisfied with this, because it&#8217;s really not possible to do the original justice, but this is what I&#8217;ve got. I really could have just thrown the acapella on here, that&#8217;s a good enough <a href="http://twitter.com/search/100">#100</a> for me. They say we&#8217;ll nod our heads to anything said over a beat and they lament the fact that too much of what is said over those beats is destructive.</p>
<p>So here&#8217;s something good to nod your head to. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This one is for all my college / community radio family.</p>
<p>So a little while back, my man JR <a href = "http://beatvizionblog.wordpress.com/2007/11/29/dillagence-radio-edit/">put me up</a> on the fact that someone had made a radio edit of the Mick Boogie + Busta Rhymes + J Dilla tape. (If you don&#8217;t know what I&#8217;m talking about, you should  <a href="http://mixtapeshow.net/1128/mixtape-95-dillagence/">listen to the Dillagence tape, here</a>). I still do a little <a href="http://kucr.org">radio work</a> myself, so I was happy to hear that the tape would be getting some more exposure.</p>
<p>After checking the edit, though, I realized that while it was pretty good, there were some pretty serious words that slipped through in the edit. I am &#8211; unfortunately &#8211; really really well versed in FCC indecency rulings, having met with pretty much the top lawyers in DC on the subject. And yes, your local Clear Channel affiliate may be able to write off a max $350,000 fine for a slipped &#8220;ass&#8221; here and there as a business expense, but a local underground station can&#8217;t.</p>

<p>So &#8211; building off of AJ&#8217;s mix, this one is more polished, and 100% radio friendly* for current US legal climate.</p>
<p>I also took the liberty of flip-editing the N-word. Not that the &#8220;nigga&#8221; or any of its variants are subject to FCC fines (let that sink in for a second), but I know a lot of DJs who&#8217;d prefer to not play it. &#8220;Bitch&#8221;, however, is intact.</p>
<p>So for all you young DJs looking for something to drop on your next weekly session, download this, burn it up, and push play.<br />

<span class = "hilite"><a href = "http://myspace.com/perceep">Percee P</a> &#8211; Lung Collapsing Lyrics feat Pharoahe Monch.</span> This cut is just too much.<br />
<span class = "hilite">Percee P &#8211; Yes, You May feat A.G. and Lord Finesse.</span> The internal rhymes before anyone even knew what that was. I&#8217;m not sure why anyone would choose to dispose of those that chose to go to their shows, but if he says it, I believe it. Shouts to Percee. I hear he has a new record out.<br />
<span class = "hilite">Percee P &#8211; 1991 Freestyle feat Lord Search.</span> The beatboxing on here is just comedy, but if you actually listen past that, you&#8217;ll hear the lyrical mastery.</p>

Stealing somebody&#8217;s lunch, their lunch money, and then making them buy their lunch back from you? That&#8217;s <em>horrible</em>. Did I say Busta wasn&#8217;t funny anymore? I take it back.</p>
<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Busta Rhymes</strong> &#8211; Step Up.</span> This beat is just ridiculous.</p>
<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Busta Rhymes</strong> &#8211; Words from Ma Dukes.</span> Dilla&#8217;s moms speaks to the people.</p>
<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Busta Rhymes</strong>, <strong>Q-Tip</strong>, and <strong>Talib Kweli</strong> &#8211; Lightworks.</span> One-upping the version on the 2K8 soundtrack. I remember my first time at the Do-Over and seeing people just go bananas to this song. Not this song, actually, just the instrumental. Like 1:30 of the Lightworks instrumental off of Donuts, and just wow. I was absolutely blown away.</p>
<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Busta Rhymes</strong> and <strong>Rah Digga</strong> &#8211; Best That Ever Did It.</span> RD is just crazy on this track. References to Portishead, Benzino, Eminiem&#8217;s drug habit all in the same verse? Busta&#8217;s just a given here.</p>
<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Busta Rhymes</strong> and <strong>M.O.P.</strong> &#8211; Classic.</span> Dig what he says at the end about Dilla&#8217;s production and EQing, which is something I&#8217;ve heard a lot. For those who this doesn&#8217;t seem like a big deal to, talk to anyone who&#8217;s ever been on deadline for an album and the studio lost the Protools files. Not fun.</p>
<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Busta Rhymes</strong> and <strong>Rah Digga</strong> &#8211; The Range.</span> As much as I loved that <a href="http://mixtapeshow.net/1019/mixtape-92-little-brother-dj-dub/">Plastic Cups remix</a> (anyone who came to my last house party knows that one took on special significance!), this one is really just that dope. I have apparently been sleeping on Rah Digga: </p>

<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Busta Rhymes</strong> and <strong>Rah Digga</strong> &#8211; Not Right Now. </span>Beat on this one is ridiculous. That &#8220;not right now&#8221; hook is alternately cool and hilarious.</p>
<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Busta Rhymes</strong>, <strong>Cassidy</strong>, <strong>Papoose</strong> &#8211; Psycho.</span> Somehow this makes me think of Cypress Hill. Cassidy has some pretty ridiculous lines on there, but Papoose with that &#8220;I&#8217;m the new era like a mistake on your computer&#8221;, and the &#8220;www&#8221; lines is just too much. And you know what, I miss Cassidy.</p>
<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Busta Rhymes</strong> &#8211; Dillagence Outro.</span> The end of this is absolutely priceless. I won&#8217;t ruin it for you.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s it. If you want the full version &#8211; go get it, there&#8217;s plenty on there that wouldn&#8217;t fit here.</p>

For some reason I found this on my iPod when I was still in China, and jammed it for like three days straight &#8211; then I accidentally deleted my hard drive. <p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Phonte </strong>- Interlude: Wack Freestyles.</span> I couldn&#8217;t resist this one. It&#8217;s just so&#8230;meta. Come on. He&#8217;s <em>making fun of mixtapes</em>. And this <em>is </em>a mixtape! Get it? Okay yeah but a good sign of a poor rapper is someone who can&#8217;t string together a decent demo without using an established song as a crutch. I&#8217;ve got no problem with unofficial remixes and bootlegs (check the archives on this very hip-hop podcast) but unless you have a specific reason for doing otherwise, find your own beats. <p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Guru </strong>- State of Clarity feat <strong>Common</strong>. </span>Off the upcoming <em>Jazzmatazz Volume 4 The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future.</em> Does the sample on this one remind anybody else of <em>Taxi</em>? <a href = "http://www.myspace.com/guru7grand">myspace.com/guru7grand</a>.</p>
<p><span class = "hilite"><strong>Beautiful Mindz</strong> &#8211; Poet Past The Weak.</span> <strong>Dudley Perkins</strong> is one of the spaciest people alive. The <strong>BeautifulMindz </strong>record (consisting of <strong>Georgia Anne Muldrow</strong>, <strong>Dudley Perkins</strong>, and the UK&#8217;s own <strong>2Tall</strong>) is ridiculous. Seriously. This spent a good two weeks in my car. This record has my official endorsement. <p>Other than that, though, this episode is all about first impressions. When you are a child of the MTV generation like I am, and you have crazy ADHD like I do, and you bought a Sidekick for the sole purpose of being able to IM and drive at the same time like I did, you rarely have the attention span for much beyond the first minute and a half or so of a new CD.</p>
<p>And as anybody who has ever sold indie CDs out of a trunk on a busy thoroughfare will tell you, the first impression is the difference between a sale and an angry look.</p>

<p><SPAN class = "hilite">J.R. Writer &#8211; To Be A Diplomat. </SPAN> I like how the dude fits a good portion of the backstory to his entire career into the first track of his CD, just like he&#8217;s trying to bring you up to speed on who he is and why you should care. <p><SPAN class = "hilite">Murs &#8211; Intro. </SPAN> This is pretty much a given. If you don&#8217;t already own this album, get off of my internet. As soon as you put this cut in, you know the rest of the album cannot possibly be anything other than hot. <a href="http://www.myspace.com/murs316">myspace.com/murs316</a></p>
<p><SPAN class = "hilite">M.I.A. &#8211; Banana Skit. </SPAN> 30 seconds of weird. I bet a lot of you actually skipped this track looking for &#8220;Galang&#8221;. Dummies. Get yrself an educayshuuuuuuuuuun! <a href="http://www.miauk.com/">miauk.com</a></p>
<p><SPAN class = "hilite">Agallah &#8211; Gangster. </SPAN> Summer of 2005 (okay I was late), this stayed in the deck like stupid. I replay this to the point where I should be sick of it, but I&#8217;m still not. This joint was my introduction to Purple City, period (again, slow). I don&#8217;t know if the mixtape is even available anymore, but if you can find it, there are some gems on Doomsday. <a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&#038;friendid=24546370">myspace.com/agallahdonbishop</a>.</p>
<p><SPAN class = "hilite">Stanza &#8211; Enter In.</SPAN>  I wish I had found this CD in my stash before I&#8217;d started the <a href="http://mixtapeshow.net/0401/mixtape-66-soul/">Soul episode</a>. Two minutes of telling you who he is, and what you&#8217;re going to hear for the next 48. The production and the wordplay are both worth a rewind. Probably the best surprise I&#8217;ve found in the mail all month. <p><SPAN class = "hilite">Superiority Complex &#8211; Intro. </SPAN> See, these dudes get to talk all cocky like that in their intros, and the second I try things like that, females start looking at me crossways. Not fair. These two invite a lot of criticism based on their name alone (not to mention their insulting the rapping public at large), but I think their opening attack ain&#8217;t half bad. <a href = "http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&#038;friendID=47727064">myspace.com/superioritycomplexmusic</a>.</p>
<p><SPAN class = "hilite">Now On &#8211; Ascension.</SPAN> I remember kinda being eh on this cut until they brought in them crazy-ass synths and rhodes. I actually have a hard time concentrating on the lyrics because the instro just really goes that hard. <p>I get a lot of email and IMs from people asking me how I do my show, what sort of software I use, how I get new music, and so on. So here&#8217;s yet another spinoff series (how many are there now? damn): <strong>The Blueprint</strong>. In Vol 1, we&#8217;re going to be covering <strong>how to start up and approach your very own podcast</strong>, from the mechanics to your own mindset.</p>
<p>A lot of this is philosophical and theoretical, so if that doesn&#8217;t interest you, that&#8217;s fine. You can just listen to me talk over the beats. As an added bonus, almost every bit of software I recommend in this show is free.</p>

<p><b>Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician</b> &#8211; You Are. This is an old joint off of <b>Lightweight Heavy</b>. Really the whole album is worth owning, and if you dig this cut, I&#8217;d recommend doing some research and finding more of this cat&#8217;s work.</p>

<p>So with that said, I&#8217;ve tried to put some of the joints that really caught my attention over the last few months on this podcast. Don&#8217;t call it &#8220;leftovers&#8221;, cause it ain&#8217;t that, but just because sometimes I just can&#8217;t fit a song into a particular episode shouldn&#8217;t mean that it never gets out.</p>

Regardless of what I might have said about that Dangerdoom project, I&#8217;m still a Doom fan &#8211; and I&#8217;ve always liked Dabrye&#8217;s shit. <p><strong>Nicolay</strong> &#8211; The End Is Near feat <strong>Black Spade</strong>. I was actually so swamped a few months ago that I never actually got to listen to this record until I was in Hong Kong. I remember the overall record &#8211; <strong>Here</strong> &#8211; being sort of hit or miss sometimes, but for the Black Spade joints are definitely worth checking out. <strong>Justin Timberlake</strong> &#8211; My Love (<strong>Benja Styles</strong> remix with <strong>Vybz Kartel</strong>). I realize that probably most of you have had this song played the fuck out by now, but I really couldn&#8217;t let this remix sit any longer. I don&#8217;t know what to call it &#8211; I&#8217;ve heard Space Funk (or maybe I made that up? I can&#8217;t remember), Neo Funk, and TK seems to have settled on Soultronica, which I think is fairly accurate. You&#8217;ll see what I mean when you listen to the episode. <p>DJ Spinna &#8211; Intergalactic Soul feat Phonte of Little Brother. This is sort of a weird record. Spinna starts off with two or three solid space-hop joints &#8211; this being the hottest &#8211; and then just when he&#8217;s got a good momentum going, he turns around and runs straight for motherfucking Chicago. <p>J Davey &#8211; No More (Donwill Piracy Remix). At long last, after nearly 8 months of talking about it, I&#8217;ve finally gotten some J Davey material. I&#8217;d already heard the original joint, but this unofficial remix puts it over the fucking top. <p>Jneiro Jarel &#8211; Breathin&#8217; feat Rocque Wun. In true space-age fashion, both of these artists have names that I can&#8217;t pronounce. For some reason I slept on Jarel&#8217;s last album for the longest &#8211; something about the cover art, I don&#8217;t know. <p><strong>CX Kidtronik</strong> f/ <strong>Agallah </strong>- What t&#8217; Hell Wit Y&#8217;all. I&#8217;d never heard of <strong>CX </strong>before, and for a hot minute I was about to throw his album into the reject bin. <strong>Krak Attack</strong> is one of those albums that you have to listen to a couple of times to &#8220;get&#8221;, and then it stays in your CD player for weeks &#8211; kinda like the <strong>Airborn Audio</strong> joint &#8211; which, incidentally, both members of appear on the record. The thing that I respect about <strong>Ag </strong>is that he comes off like he&#8217;s absolutely fucking nuts half of the time. He&#8217;s obviously way more adventurous with his beats than 90% of other majors, and the fact that he and <strong>CX </strong>were able to put a droning broken Nintendo sound together with <strong>Ag</strong>&#8216;s flow and make something that sounds really fucking gangster just speaks to their talent. Basically the concept here is a typical summer day &#8211; I won&#8217;t get all nostalgic about summers spent during my middle school years &#8211; you know, ice cream, running through sprinklers, and coke binges, you get the idea. One day, one mixtape.  Here we go.</p>

Dawn&#8217;s broke like a minute ago, but nobody&#8217;s really awake yet &#8211; this is the joint you ride your bike around the block to, because you feel like it, and anyway you don&#8217;t have a driver&#8217;s license yet. I was about to play &#8220;Dollar&#8221;, but a) you&#8217;ve all probably already heard that and b) I don&#8217;t know, I couldn&#8217;t help thinking about Reaganomics every time I listened to it. More science from <a href="http://soundincolor.com">Sound In Color</a>. Hope you guys aren&#8217;t mad that I played singing on the rap show. If you are, fuck off. </p>

<p><font size = "3" color = "#ADC32A">High Noon</font>: Exile f/ Jontel &#8211; Summertime in LA. I&#8217;ll fully admit that this one is a little odd. Still, though, it&#8217;s sort of oddly catchy, and definitely on some weird next level yet familiar shit. Every time I listen to this I think of Costco. I have no idea why, because I don&#8217;t really like Costco that much. But I like this song. This one definitely goes at noon, though. Haven&#8217;t heard much about Jontel, but we all know Exile here, right? Right. <a href="http://soundincolor.com">soundincolor.com</a>.</p>
<p><font size = "3" color = "#ADC32A">2:30 PM</font>: Lawless Element f/ J Dilla &#8211; Love. Yeah. It&#8217;s early afternoon, you&#8217;re thirteen, somebody just stole your Pokemon cards, and you&#8217;re about to ride on the motherfuckers. That&#8217;s what the fuck I&#8217;m talking about. Have you ever bought a Wal-Mart CD with the edits, and realized that the edits make the song a bit better? That&#8217;s the case with this one &#8211; the bleep edits actually make Dilla&#8217;s (who, as one would expect, totally outshines everyone in this song) part a lot more interesting. I never got to listen to this whole album, but the parts I did hear were pretty good &#8211; easily recommendable if you like this track. <a href="http://babygrande.com">babygrande.com</a>.</p>
<p><font size = "3" color = "#ADC32A">6:30 PM</font>: DJ DMD f/ Screwed Up Click (Chopped by DJ Ryno). And this one rounds out the show &#8211; late afternoon, just maxin in the Rite-Aid parking lot with your cheap-ass ride. I came really, really close to saving this one for a slowed &#038; chopped episode, but I don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;ll ever get around to doing that &#8211; if anyone wants to get at me with some of that shit, definitely holler at me about that. This one is pretty much a classic in my opinion, though. RIP Screw and Pat.</p>

All kidding aside, I&#8217;ve got some pretty out-there and interesting shit for y&#8217;all this week.  We&#8217;re gonna start off with some more straight-ahead <strong>hip-hop</strong> from across the pond, then jump into some <strong>grime</strong>, then hit you over the head with some of that <strong>suvvin rap</strong> shit.  Don&#8217;t miss the messages section at the end, complete with some more <strong>Dilla</strong>-inspired beats.</p>
<p><span class="highlight"><strong>Assaviour </strong>and <strong>Jehst </strong>- Money in the Bank (orig. version).</span> This episode is gonna get crazy, so I thought I&#8217;d start y&#8217;all off with something that you could handle. <span class="highlight"><strong>Jehst </strong>- City of Industry.</span>  From the description on the record itself:  &#8220;One of the first tracks <strong>Jehst </strong>recorded for <strong>Low Life</strong>, this perfectly illustrates how he creates atmosphere with music and paints pictures with his words&#8221;.  Sounds accurate to me. <a href = "http://www.lowliferecords.co.uk/">lowliferecords.co.uk</a>.  Shouts to <strong>Chess </strong>for linking these up.</p>
<p><span class="highlight"><strong>Plan B</strong> &#8211; Sick 2 Def.</span> I hope to god I don&#8217;t lose y&#8217;all on this joint.  This is the first of two joints you&#8217;re gonna hear on this show from the long-awaited <strong>Run The Road Pt. 2</strong> compilation. This is probably my favorite joint on the compilation, which is weird because: 1: there are no drums or grimy basslines, meaning it&#8217;s not really even (?) grime. And 2: I almost never listen to the song, because it&#8217;s fucking difficult to listen to.  Trust me &#8211; wait until the third verse. If you can sit through that shit without your spine tingling due to the <em>absolutely fucking vivid</em> shit that <strong>Plan B</strong> is spitting, then you need to go back to Kelly Clarkson. </p>
<p><span class="highlight"><strong>Kano </strong>- Mic Check Remix f/ Demon &#038; Ghetto.</span> Switched it up on you. This is another joint from the <strong>Run The Road 2</strong> compilation, but is definitely more in line with what your idea of grime is.  And if you don&#8217;t even know what grime is yet, then this is probably a pretty good introduction, but you need to start paying attention.  If y&#8217;all want more of this, I&#8217;ll see what I can do.  In the meantime though, check the bassline on this joint. <p>Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the only mixtape show / hip-hop podcast worth fucking with.  I&#8217;m dex digital.  </p>
<p>The hip-hop community has suffered a tragic loss recently.  This show is not a &#8220;dedication&#8221;, or a &#8220;tribute&#8221;, but I&#8217;d like to take a moment here and on the show to show appreciation and gratitude for a man that has done so much for us.</p>
<p>On with the show.</p>
<p><span class="highlight"><strong>Exile </strong>f/ <strong>Slum Village</strong> &#8211; Time Has Come. </span> It&#8217;s weird, because when I started putting tracks together for this week&#8217;s episode, I had already set this aside for the opening track.  Exile is on the beats here (you&#8217;ve heard him here before), and lest anyone forget what Dilla was capable of on the other side of the glass&#8230;<strong>Jon</strong>, good looking out on the hookup with this one. <p><span class="highlight"><strong>Diverse </strong>- Jus Biz.</span>  Not new by any stretch, but I remember finding this joint on a plain b&#038;w 12&#8243; with nothing other than the title written on it, and thinking it was pretty smooth.  Turns out that (according to the liner notes) not only is it Prefuse 73 on the beats, but also the background vocals.  I think Diverse also showed up on Longshot&#8217;s Civil War Pt. 2 mixtape.  Definitely check out the rest of the One A.M. full length &#8211; definitely worth your time.  Respect to <strong>Gwen </strong>at <strong>Chocolate Industries</strong> for making this one happen. <p><span class="highlight"><strong>Rebel&#8217;s Advocate</strong> &#8211; Panic in the Streets.</span>  This one came to me on a CDR with a paper cover, which I&#8217;m pretty sure is the reason that it got stuck in my CD player the first time I listened to this track.  The rhodes/wurli tones beat on this is definitely my flavor, as is the subject matter.  They&#8217;ve got another dope joint on their mini EP called &#8220;Bite&#8221;, which is pretty much 5 minutes of just that &#8211; classic beats included.  Maybe if you all ask nicely enough, it&#8217;ll show up on the show in the near future&#8230;<a href = "http://www.rebelsadvocate.com">rebelsadvocate.com</a> for more.</p>
<p><span class="highlight"><strong>Captain Cook</strong> &#8211; Shining Hour.</span>  For some reason I kept thinking this kid&#8217;s name was Captain Commando.  Isn&#8217;t Captain Commando a nintendo game?  Either that or Sky Commando, or something like that.  Anyway, this is one of a few joints that Cook of the Beat Locker shot me via email.  I&#8217;m not sure who the MCs are on this, but they ain&#8217;t bad, and you have to appreciate anyone who has the balls to work their email address into a verse.  The bassline and programming on this joint is what really caught me from the drop though.  Cook, who are these people?  Good work.  Check <a href = "http://www.myspace.com/thecaptaincook">myspace.com/thecaptaincook</a> for more beats.</p>
<p>What follows is not a <strong>Dilla </strong>tribute, because I&#8217;d need about 5 hours to cover the basics.  But I thought these few joints were appropriate.</p>
<p><span class="highlight"><strong>J Dilla </strong>- Yesterday beat flip.</span>  The classic <strong>Dilla </strong>formula &#8211; some obscure record and brilliantly understated manipulation of the samples.  This is unreleased as far as I know, so that&#8217;s about all I have for you.  If there is an official track name, feel free to comment me and let me know.</p>
<p><span class="highlight"><strong>J Dilla</strong> &#8211; Airworks.</span>  This one comes off of Dilla&#8217;s last release, <strong>Donuts</strong>.  If you haven&#8217;t already copped it, do so.  It&#8217;s pretty much the beat tape to end all beat tapes.  I think maybe the sample here is Luther, but I don&#8217;t spend all day digging in fucking record crates so I wouldn&#8217;t know.  Anyone more enlightened than me, feel free to ID this one.</p>
<p><span class="highlight"><strong>J Dilla</strong> &#8211; Donuts (Intro).</span>  The appropriately-named last track of <strong>Dilla</strong>&#8216;s most recent blessing.  Better writers than I have already conveyed their emotions regarding the passing of this man, so I&#8217;ll keep my comments brief.</p>
<p>I remember finding this record sitting on my desk the day I got the news.  I sat down and listened to it the whole way through, and this last cut, especially the last 8 seconds or so, were pretty powerful to me.  The track speaks for itself &#8211; just listen.</p>
<p>And if you haven&#8217;t already picked up a copy of Donuts, please go out and do so now.  The man was a genius, and he had people to support.  <span class="highlight"><a href = "http://www.stonesthrow.com">stonesthrow.com</a>.</span></p>

Feel free to drop shoutouts, tell me what you think of the show, tell me why you wish Cheney had been shot instead of vice versa, leave a freestyle, leave a drop, leave your thoughts, whatever.  Whatever you want.  The interesting/funny/dope messages will be played on the show, so if you&#8217;re doing freestyles, make them good.</p>
