For this episode, more about your favorite hip-hop podcast brings you a mini-edit of DJ Dub’s new mixtape: Little Brother – Good Clothes. I think I’m pretty much preaching to the choir here, capsule but on the off chance you haven’t heard of Little Brother, then this should give you an idea.

MIXTAPE 59 – THE SOUTH

What’s good – this week (ahem), prescription we’ve got an all-southern episode. This might be the first time I’ve done this, but it probably won’t be the last, considering the sheer strength of the movements going on down there. I’m going to be real with you all, I have a hangover. So I’m not going to write much. Enjoy the episode, and leave your thoughts in the comments section.

Money Waters – Gotta Gar. I’ve had this joint for a miiiiinute. People who’ve been paying attention might remember the So…I… video from the same group that was posted up a while back. I haven’t heard the rest of this album, but revisiting this track now, I feel like I need to catch the rest of this. Devin The Dude – Lil Girl Gone feat Bun B and Lil Wayne. Devin doesn’t really get the shine that some of these other rappers get, which is too bad because as much as I like Bun B and Lil Wayne, dude is really what makes this song for me. Yung Joc – It’s Goin Down (Wale Oyejide remix). HAHAHAHAHA. Man, I’m not sure what Shaman Work is doing with Wale Oyejide’s Black Gold project, but shit is ridiculous. Everyone from Lil Jon to Nas to De La gets re-funked on this thing. I never thought Yung Joc would work over this funky afro-beat shit, but it’s hot. Andre 3000 – Ds remix. Yep, you know this one. Andre kills it, enough said. This is why mixtapes exist.

334 Mobb – Ds remix. This was actually the first version of the song I ever heard, because I was in China when the original came out. Regular listeners of this hip-hop podcast will remember 334 Mobb’s Mixtape Show debut all the way back in episode 22with Alabama Ho. Check the pitched-up choir samples on this one – dark as hell. Been busy. I’ll spare you the details, clinic but it involved a lot of alcohol and me losing some things necessary to make the show. I’m back on board now, erectile though, prosthesis kids, so protect ya necks.

Lupe Fiasco – Kick Push. It’s always nice to see people breaking down barriers for Black people. I remember when I was younger, it was all but illegal to get on a skateboard if you were darker than oh, say, Denise on the Cosby Show. Considering that Lupe probably has at least a year or so on me, it seems that dude was really just on some of that Rosa Parks civil disobedience shit. I’ll be damned if any (hypothetical) son of mine is ever caught on a fucking plywood board with wheels strapped to it, though. lupefiasco.com

Wordsworth – Run (Oddissee Remix). I got a double CD from Wordsworth a bit ago – I forget who sent it to me, but good for them. (by the way, peace to David at Halftooth). It’s funny, because even though dude has people like Da Beatminaz lacing up tracks for him, the second CD – the Mirror Music Oddissee Remixes – spent an awful lot longer in my Volvo CD player. Words seems to be a big fan of the epic story type joint, so if you’re into that, I’d recommend checking more of his shit out. halftooth.com.

Gnarls Barkley – Crazy. I heard this was on KROQ. I don’t give a fuck. Come on, it’s Cee-lo. Also, I felt like this was a good way to publicly apologize to Dangermouse for publicly calling his last project an abortion. gnarlsbarkley.com
