MIXTAPE EPISODE 56

As noted in the last post, epidemic this episode was delayed because the earthquake that hit just off the coast of Taiwan not only put several cracks in my apartment wall, tablets but knocked out Southern China’s internet for a couple weeks. Sorry and shit, gynecologist on with the show.

Sway – Little Derek feat Baby Blue. Sad to say, I slept on this – as in was totally unaware of its existence until Suburb put me up on it. The joint is ridiculous catchy, and this Baby Blue chick rips it up as well. I know it’s more than a few UK listeners on this site – how is Sway being received in the streets over there? Pretty much the whole album is Blu ripping up funky-ass samples like this. I haven’t had a chance to really sit down with the whole thing, but I can say that it is ridiculous. MIXTAPE 41 – RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Well, decease I had to do it. Today’s show contains more than a few joints that a lot of people out there would consider blasphemous. That’s fine. Before you call Focus on the Family on me though, check (happened once before), think for a second about shit like the crack epidemic, about Katrina, about Sudan, and then tell me that there’s no good reason that people should feel like they’ve been shut out. Let’s move.

Mobb Deep feat 50 Cent – Pearly Gates. Exile on the beats here. This is the joint that was censored by Interscope – as in you can’t even get this version that you’re about to hear here in stores. I mean, you’ve got Prodigy saying shit like that he’s going to “see [Jesus] when he sees him” or that he’s gonna beat Jesus up “like the movie” (I’m assuming he’s talking about The Passion of the Christ). But of course, I don’t know what happened in the movie because I didn’t see it, because of the White Jesus factor.

Also, why are people whining about Fiddy singing on hooks? I think he sings good hooks. Please leave Fiddy alone. Dude wants to sing, let him sing. He’s had a rough life. Poor guy.

Sin Sizzerb – If God Close the Gate. Sin once again brings some fairly complex lyricism. Not complex like Ghostface, say, but more like complex like when you were in English class and your teacher would make you interpret poetry and shit. A lot of Sin’s more recent shit seems to have a lot of symbolism going on, which I can hardly argue with. Dude comes off as a pretty well-read individual, aside from having a unique-ass flow. L Jamar – Here Comes the Sun. I like the sample, I like his flow, but this somehow sounds almost too cheerful. I mean, it’s a great song, but I mean, a happy rapper? Who the fuck wants to hear a happy rapper?

Anyway, this song is pretty much loaded with 5% wordplay and ideas. Like I mentioned in the show, on the off chance that you didn’t catch that terrible-ass issue of the Source where they did a “history of the Nation of Gods and Earths” feature, you pretty much have to educate yourself on this shit if you want to continue listening to rap. I really don’t mean to insult anyone out there with this knowledge, but I know there are a lot of “oh man I found this great hippity-hop show on the interweb and its run by this guy who almost sounds white” people out there, and I’m really just looking out for you. I tell you because I care.

Akir - Urban Sprawl. Yes, this instrumental has been getting around a little bit – I think that just speaks to Exile’s talent. Damn, we been on this interview ish for a minute now. Next show is a music joint, promise.

This week on the best hip-hop mixtape podcast on the internets, we got The Source‘s Unsigned Hype alumni Akir. Dude has been making serious moves for a minute now, and I finally caught up to him for an interview. He’s dodging buses or some shit while we talk via celly so the audio’s a bit hectic, but Akir still drops some serious shit about his artistic philosophy, the international market, the state of hip-hop in the US, and what it’s like doing shows at the historically non-rap-oriented Vans Warped Tour.

Also he breaks down Politricks, which is one of the tracks that I’d been getting the most positive feedback on. So if you were looking for the artist himself to explain what he was going for with that track, you’ll definitely want to listen. There’s also some info on his upcoming projects in there, and I’m probably leaving out something. Just listen.

Oh yeah, I forgot – there’s another new single in there – Calling. You’re definitely going to want to make it to the end of the podcast for that joint, and no fast-forwarding either, you impatient fucks.

MIXTAPE SHOW EPISODE 6 – the conscious edition

Damn, urticaria this took me a minute to get out.

I’m gonna keep the intro short to this one, ask considering that I’ve been writing mad articles on this ish lately. Basically I’d been thinking on doing an all-”conscious” mixtape for a minute now. There’s a lot of tracks I’d love to put on here, ampoule but I’m limited to what I can get permission for. Fortunately for you, every goddamn song I put out here is quality, and this episode is no exception – this one might actually kinda suprise you. The mixdown is dirty, but the songs is hot, no joke. Let’s have that tracklist…

First off, a beat courtesy of Shudoshi of earbubbles. I got no idea what earbubbles is, but I know that Shudoshi is a cool dude and you can hit him up at earbubbles.com for all your production needs, as well as your general hip-hop listening needs. They got some kinda record they tryna sell…hit em up.

Next is Akir with his week-old single, Politricks. Shit is hot, no joke. I’m gonna put my name on the line here and say that I am expecting big things from this cat. He’s already been in Unsigned Hype, he’s got a collab with Immortal Technique, and shit, you can just go read about him yourself. Bottom line, he’s kinda nice. This single is for sale, by the way, so if you like it, cop it. Be on the lookout for an interview if we can work it out…

Third – Chester Copperpot. I just wrapped an interview with dude the other day so I’m gonna keep quiet about this track – Out The Bunker featuring Braintax. Shit is nice, especially considering that it gets even more relevant as time goes on (it was recorded in ’02). Be on the lookout for that interview coming next week (I mention it near the end) – you do not want to miss that shit. You’re gonna end up playing it for your moms and them.

Moving on, we got the Goats with Typical American, straight outta 1992. I actually found this track via Mattmatical at can i bring my gat?, so peace to him. From there I hit dudes up on their site, asked for permission, and a couple weeks later, here it is in the mix. You can hit them up on their website here. Peace again to the goats.

Next, we got Wrekonize featuring Ras Kass on Bizness as Usual, another really goddamn recent single. I’ve got to say that Ras drops a couple bars that I ain’t exactly down with, but in the interest of creating dialogue and keeping hip-hop as a medium of expression of self, it’s kinda necessary to listen to what other people are saying. And that’s all the intellectualization I’m giving you for today, kids, because you know that shit ruins music. Look what happened to jazz. Still, though, heavy track.

Awwwww, shit. It’s Earatik Statik with Evil is Timeless. I drop this shit all the damn time on radio, and peoples love it. So if you don’t like it, you need to hide ya face cause something is wrong with you. Check the lyrics and the production in here. Harsh. Interview anyone? Sef, get at me.

Last, back again once it’s the incredible Binary Star with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The whole Waterworld/Masters of the Universe thing is hot, and OneBeLo is dropping crazy crazy science on heads on his own nowadays – so much, in fact, that I ain’t even mad at him for being on Warped Tour. I’m gonna do my best to link you all up with info on each artist so that you can get more of their material without having to google around for it. With that in mind, then, I gotta give a shout out to Akir – you heard him last week – you can check some of his tracks on that site, for free. And if you’re in the D.C. area, you might even be able to catch him live on the 27th.

Okay, I lied, I have two more things to talk about.

Third. I’m getting great feedback so far about the last show, but if you got anything you want to say, you really just gotta let me know. For example, if you like Artist A, let a brother know, cause more than likely I can get an interview set up with them, and you can get even more info/ish on your favorite Mixtape artists – who knows, maybe some exclusives. We gotta use this rap podcasting thing to its fullest extent, right? And related to my second point, if you are a promoter/label exec/rich benefactor of the arts, and you need to get at one of these artists to set up an event/whatever, try getting at me, I might be able to link you up with them if you can’t find their info elsewhere.

Fourth. Has anybody else out there heard Smitty’s “Diamonds on My Neck”? Ish sounds like something I wrote when I was in fourth grade. Not that that’s a bad thing, I was a child prodigy. Still am. Holler at me.
