MIXTAPE 124 – THE SKATE TAPE

Yeah. So first, I have several shoutouts – Mamiko for sending me my board, everyone I know out here in the city for probably unknowingly influencing me to buy one, Elliot for – well, I’m not sure, but somehow I think he influenced this one too.

And real talk, I’m not trying to act like someone who’s been down since day one on this. I only got my jawn like a month and a half ago, and my best trick is a little number I like to call “not falling”. But to be fair, growing up where and when I did, general common sense said that black people do not ride skateboards (I think my father might have actually told me this once). Somehow I did manage to own a pair of rollerblades, but that’s beside the point.

But yeah, this is a tape specifically engineered for hitting the pavement during these last few weeks of summer. Put this in the iphone/ipod/whatever devices you foreigners are using nowadays and hit the streets.

Tracklist

instromental: Madlib – Blunt Break.
Jay Electronica – Retro Electro. With DJ Clue screaming all over it, which maybe makes it better, I’m not sure. I was having a hard time thinking of what to start this off with, when I found this in the archives. I’m sort of looking forward to skating to this. m/jayelect

Che Grand – King ✖ Grand. My official theory behind the name of this track is that Che found out how to make this ✖ mark and decided to use it in a song. m/chegrand

Unagi – Song of Satisfaction feat Eddie Meeks. Shouts to Unagi for hitting me with this record in I think March. Actually, I’m certain it’s March, as I was listening to it back at home in CA and my moms heard me playing it and asked me who it was because she liked it – then she heard this particular track and said that “that man just ruined a very nice song”. I think the chorus is sort of great, personally. I cut this off halfway, but if you want the rest, go check it out. m/unagi

K-Salaam & Beatnick – Don’t Die feat Bun B, Talib Kweli, and Colin Munroe. I still don’t really understand the chorus here. “Don’t die” sounds like something you tell somebody before they try something stupid, like being Mexican and walking into a 7-11 with your hands in your pockets – but this song doesn’t even have any Spanish in it, so I’m sort of confused. That said, it’s a pretty good track. m/ksalaammusic

The Roots – !!!!!!!. Yeah. m/theroots

Tanya Morgan – Hardcore Gentlemen. The high pitched rapping in here is going to evoke a really obvious connection some other groups/tracks, but I think that’s the point. This song is great. “I took her to the movies and got her hella Skittles”? Brilliant. m/tanyamorgan

Wait, is that where I’ve been going wrong? Skittles. Had no idea it was that simple.

Born Wit It – Elevators Freestyle. The rest of the Substance Abuse tape ain’t too bad, either. w/bornwitit

J. Cole – Til Infinity. Somehow the last cut made me think of this one. Shouts to Ultra Ouxu for recommending this tape.

Hudson Mohawke – Rising 5. I mean, I’d heard of Hudson Mo before, but nothing like this. This is so good I felt bad talking over it. w/hudsonmo

Cymbals Eat Guitars – Living North. I mean, you can’t have a skate tape without at least some guitars in it, right? w/cymbalseatguitars

PS: My board is actually a longboard, and it’s hella cool. I should post a picture of it or something.

MIXTAPE 64 – THE EMO RAP EPISODE

And no, before you close the window in horror, Atmosphere does not make an appearance in this episode. This ain’t that kind of party, ladies and gentlemen. If you want to know what this show is about, you sort of have to listen.

Sorry in advance for making fun of British people.

Tracklist time!

Termanology – 50 Bodies (prod. Marley Marl). Who needs a hook? Not him. I like. Note the Sean Bell reference.myspace.com/therealtermanology

Skillz – Don’t Act Like You Don’t Know feat Freeway – I’m not sure why it took me so long to get these two on the show, but here they are. myspace.com/yourghostwriter.

Che Grand – Che Grand Was Bored (prod. Suburb). Yeah, that’s the track name I was given. That’s how exclusive we get on this hip-hop podcast – bootleg one-verse joints recorded on computer microphones. Still, it’s been a long-ass time since we’ve heard from anybody in the Loud Minority camp, hint hint. loudminoritymusic.com

Trump – Da Souf. Off the Hate It or Get It mixtape. If you don’t know about this dude already, you haven’t been listening to the show. Go do your homework. myspace.com/shamanwork

Mac Dre - Not My Job. This was my jam for like 3 weeks out in China, for whatever reason. I never really got up on half the shit that was (and still is) happening in the Bay, but the small collection of the late Mac Dre that I do have is pretty hot. That line about the grocery shopping is funny as hell. myspace.com/macdre

Devin the Dude – What A Job feat Snoop Dogg and Andre 3000. That corn on the cob thing was a little odd, but then again, this is Andre we’re talking about. The album comes out on the 20th, which is today, which means that maybe you could get it or something. myspace.com/devinthedude

And there we have it. The outro joint was an Emilio Rojas beat, and the intro was by Philip Glass off the Mishima soundtrack.

You know the drill: comment, email, subscribe.

MIXTAPE EPISODE 56

As noted in the last post, this episode was delayed because the earthquake that hit just off the coast of Taiwan not only put several cracks in my apartment wall, but knocked out Southern China’s internet for a couple weeks. Sorry and shit, on with the show.

J Blow – Cali Jam 3 w/ Busy Bee. J hit me up with this on my request – the beat was just that nice. allupinyourearhole.com.

C Monts and Jonny Simps – Inner Mind’s Eye (remix). I somehow fucked around and lost the email that this came with – I’ll have an update on the artist’s site later.

Sway – Little Derek feat Baby Blue. Sad to say, I slept on this – as in was totally unaware of its existence until Suburb put me up on it. The joint is ridiculous catchy, and this Baby Blue chick rips it up as well. I know it’s more than a few UK listeners on this site – how is Sway being received in the streets over there? Hit up the comments, I’m genuinely curious. In the meantime, I definitely recommend hitting dude’s site and copping the full album. swaydasafo.com.

Che Grand – Work Flow (The Beatmaker Clock Out Remix). About time for Che to make a reappearance on the show. I think the original of this joint passed me by, but the remix really has that soul to it. Shouts to Che – when’s that next album out man? loudminoritymusic.com.

JR – All Behind Me. Off the Sessions 2 album. I’ve said enough about JR here, so I’ll keep quiet on that, other than to say that this new album is definitely worth picking up. shamanwork.com.

Johnson&Jonson – Wow!. On the exclusive tip from my man Jon at Sound in Color, this is a side project from Mixtape Show veteran Blu. Pretty much the whole album is Blu ripping up funky-ass samples like this. I haven’t had a chance to really sit down with the whole thing, but I can say that it is ridiculous. No idea when/if this thing’s coming out officially, but it’s hot. soundincolor.com.

JR – Grandz. See above. Dig the sample on this one.

Akir – Again (unofficial remix featuring John Legend). Akir hit me with like 4 new exclusives two days ago – expect to hear all or most of them very soon. I like how Akir is switching up the flow on this joint. Again, if you haven’t caught dude’s album yet, you need to. myspace.com/akir.

(outro – James Brown – Give It Up or Turn It Loose). Rest in Peace.

Run DMC – Christmas in Hollis (DJ Slice Remix). I couldn’t help it. Shouts to DJ Slice and CYN for getting at me with this one.

There it is – hopefully I move out of this building before it collapses. Hit up the comments section and let me know what you thought about this one!

All fucking right then. This week we’re getting into some more diverse shit. Check the tracklist, and download this shit. Don’t forget to subscribe to the show.

Dwele feat. Che Grand – Lady In Red. This joint is off of the “A Sensual Evening With Che Grand” mixtape. I don’t necessarily want a sensual evening with dude, but the music is generally pretty hot – this should give you an idea of what an indie label is actually capable of. I’d highly recommend copping the whole mixtape, if for no reason other than to hear the skits in between the tracks. Shit is off the wall. loudminoritymusic.com

Sa-Ra feat. J. Dilla – Thrilla. Oh, how cute – the producer and the track rhyme! Speaking of rhymes, the recently departed genius fucking smashes the first verse of this shit. Body bling like C-3P0?!? ohhhhhhh shit. The man will be missed. Shouts to Jon and everyone else at Sound In Color for giving your boy free reign on this shit. soundincolor.com

Sa-Ra – Big Fame. Okay, I know I made a comment in the show that could be taken the wrong way. Don’t get it twisted – I mean “bootleg” in the best sense of the word. I’m not sure if their record is going to be like this, but the sampler is absolutely off the fucking wall with the skits. Dear Sa-Ra: please do more of that shit. Since when does having a cookout equal “being productive”? All of you can hate all you like, but if Sa-Ra isn’t a part of this new space funk black music shit, then I’m caucasian. soundincolor.com

The Jones Girls feat. Che Grand – Nights Over Egypt. Yes, once again, an unauthorized remix off of the Sensual Evening mixtape. This should show all of you random-ass kids rapping over dead Dre beats over and over again something – namely, that anybody can do that shit. If you can rap over that electro groove shit, you have my respect, and possibly a coveted spot on the hottest rap podcast in the history of womankind. Che is a weird dude, but you can’t deny the talent. Dude rips this joint gently, if that’s possible. Fuck it, just listen. loudminoritymusic.com

Ol’ Dirty Bastard – Drunk Game. As I said in the show, this track really blurs the line between genius and insanity – which pretty much sums up the majority of the dude’s oeuvre. I have no idea who produced this – it could be RZA, or it could be one of those Casio joints that play when you push the red “demo” button. If you actually forget for a moment that it’s Unique Ason singing, you’ll notice that the man actually kinda sons about 80% of R&B singers out there.

Tanya Morgan – She Moved Outta Cincy. No, I haven’t revoked my strict “no female emcees” policy* (seriously, what the fuck is up with the ladies?! The second one of y’all hit me with some heat, I’ll put you on) – Tanya Morgan is actually three dudes that are labelmates of Mr. Che Grand. You might recognize Von Pea’s voice from a couple episodes ago. Is it just me, or is Loud Minority’s catalog full of joints about really horrible shit happening? Well, either way – TM is supposedly hot. If anyone wants more, I’ll see what I can do… loudminoritymusic.com

Damn, I managed to keep it short this week. Feel free to pass the information on, and be watching for the People Under The Stairs interview prolly next week. We all love hip-hop podcasts.

*No, really. For some reason the females have been slacking on me recently. Ladies please step your game up, thanks.

MIXTAPE SHOW EPISODE 24 – Che Grand interview

So if you’ve been paying attention to what’s good on the internets, and more specifically to the mixtape show, you’ll recognize the name: Che Grand. In case you need to refresh your memory, you can go ahead and check out episode 18 to check out his mixtape show debut.

Anyway, after that show dropped, I had more than a few people getting at me requesting more songs and information from dude, so it was only natural that we should link up and get an interview done. In this interview, Che breaks down his background, explains how he changed his name from “Ricochet” to “Che Grand”, talks about his soon-to-be-released EP and his upcoming projects, and makes a pretty thinly veiled threat towards me regarding one of my earlier comments. For the record, Brown Study is not about having sex with white girls. If you want any more information than that, you’ll need to check out the interview yourself.

All instrumentals on the joint are either from his current EP or upcoming projects – so you’re gonna hear some beats on here that you will not be hearing for another few months – at least until Conceptus Opus drops. That’s on some exclusive shit, so you definitely need to get up on this before you get left behind.

Che and company are gonna do big things, so I want y’all to remember that you saw him here first. Shouts go to everyone in Loud Minority involved with the Official Bootleg Import EP project (drops 24th January in iTunes and online stores everywhere!), and obviously to Che himself.

If you need any more info on Che or Loud Minority, check out chegrand.com and loudminoritymusic.com.

Stay tuned, major things happening right here in this spot very soon….

This show is pretty much the official relaunch of the mixtape show, the most major known unknown rap / hip-hop podcast on the internet. Basically it’s a fucking mixtape that you can download, for free, and it’s not illegal. Read the show notes, check out the artists, buy they shit, bookmark my shit, tell your friends. Let’s go.

First off is Hezekiah. I got clearance to put this joint on a long time ago, but I liked it so much that I couldn’t really find a spot to do it justice til now. Have any of you ever seen dude perform this song? I did, and he pretty much just wore a suit and jumped up and down and hollered. Nobody seemed to know the words, and nobody really seemed to care because he was wearing a suit and jumping up and down and hollering. It was great. If you get a chance to see him perform, do it. Way more energy than you’d expect from his most recent album, Hurry up and Wait, which is good by itself. Check out Hezekiah at Soulspazm.com..

Hezekiah – You.

I’ll be honest, I hadn’t heard much from these two before this. The homie John Kim from Sound in Color hooked me up with the mp3, so I had to put it on. If you want to know more, get your fucking Google on. For now though you can check out www.soundincolor.com.

Off of Up Above Records, Kev Brown. Peace to sam for getting this one to me. The song pretty much speaks for itself, so just listen. Apparently he’s done work with De La Soul, Jewel, fuck a namedrop, go listen. myspace.com/kevbrown..

Che Grand, off of his upcoming Official Bootleg Import EP. Expect an interview or feature soon, because this shit is important. From a conversation with the producer:
what up dex: is “brown study” about having sex with white girls?
westcoastbadbuoy: i honestly have no idea,
what up dex: i’m pretty sure it is.
westcoastbadbuoy: apparently brown study is some intellectual term in the dirctionary, but i’ve never bothered to look it up
what up dex: from google: “The expression is old, dating at least from the sixteenth century.”
what up dex: where the fuck did this kid go to school?
westcoastbadbuoy: lol.
what up dex: well.
what up dex: it’s about fucking white girls, anyway. thanks for clearing that up for me.

What’s up, EV? Back to the East Coast again. Has anyone actually heard the Color of Money mixtape? Honestly that joint was hotter than a lot of fucking records that came out this year. This joint is technically just Numbers, but really it’s sort of hard to pick a “best” song since there’s a handful on here that I like a lot. This one goes with the vibe of the show, though. I think you can listen to, and cop, the mixtape here: Smoke and Numbers – The Color of Money..

Smoke and Numbers – 5A.

K’naan – Struggling.

I love reading press releases about this dude because they always bold and underline the fact that dude is Somali-Canadian, as if that’s all he has going for him. Hopefully this joint lays that notion to rest. www.thedustyfoot.com.

This one came to me on a 3-track radio promo in an unmarked package, no CD case, just a printed CD cover in a paper sleeve. Anyone that listens to old DJ Shadow should recognize the beat, which was pretty much just waiting for someone to rip it up. Had to close the episode with this one. Peace to Frankie Lewis for clearing this one. www.strong-quality.com..

Black Market – The Wall.
