MIXTAPE EPISODE 54 – THE FREESTYLE JOINT

Oh shit, I’m actually on time with another episode. This is yet another concept episode, one I’ve had on the stove for a few months now – the Freestyle Episode. Skit – Chevy Ridin. Yes, another beatjack from the heretofore unknown Skit. This cat literally sent me three mp3s in an email that contained nothing but the mp3s themselves, his name, and his city (Houston). No promo, no onesheet, no nothing. I’m fucking with that. EPISODE 43 – NINTENDO MIXTAPE

So once again with the concept episodes – this time it’s some shit that I’ve had in the lab for literally a year – the Nintendo Mixtape. Every beat on this joint either uses Nintendo samples or just kinda has that vibe. Trust me, this whole episode is hot.

Dabrye f/ Jay Dee and Phat Kat – Game Over. Do you guys remember the Wu-Tang Forever Wal-Mart version? That shit was off the wall – there’s something about the sword sound effects that just made Hellz Wind Staff that much doper. So even though when I did this edit it was for radio play purposes, I realized that I actually like my nintendo’d out version a bit better. If you don’t like it, go buy the record. Actually you should cop two/three anyway – the whole thing is dope. Features include Doom, Ta’raach, etc etc – very highly recommended. And if you ever find the original 12″ of this song with Magic Says on the back – that’s worth the price of admission alone. Respect to the label for clearing this one for me like a year ago. Oh No f/ MED – The Ride. God damn this song is tough as hell. The intro is just icing, but come on. Ninja Gaiden. That shit had me trying to slice up dudes in suits and cling to walls when I was twelve like no joke. This joint is really the reason I decided I was going to do a Nintendo episode. Yo Gotti – North Memphis Freestyle. How can you not win with talking about cocaine over a pac-man loop? Yo Gotti wins here. His new mixtape is also pretty hot – I think Fate cooked up some Beetlejuice loop that is pretty hot. yogottimusic.com.

CX Kidtronik f/ Agallah - What t’ Hell Wit Y’all. I’d never heard of CX before, and for a hot minute I was about to throw his album into the reject bin. Krak Attack is one of those albums that you have to listen to a couple of times to “get”, and then it stays in your CD player for weeks – kinda like the Airborn Audio joint – which, incidentally, both members of appear on the record. The thing that I respect about Ag is that he comes off like he’s absolutely fucking nuts half of the time. He’s obviously way more adventurous with his beats than 90% of other majors, and the fact that he and CX were able to put a droning broken Nintendo sound together with Ag‘s flow and make something that sounds really fucking gangster just speaks to their talent. Thanks to Alex and Sound-Ink for hooking this one up – make sure to watch for Ag’s new album dropping soonish (where’s them exclusives Ike?!) and CX‘s album, which is out now, I think. sound-ink.com.

Cocoa Brovaz – Super Brooklyn. Yeah, the Mario Brothers beat. There’s an outside chance some of y’all have heard this before, but fuck it – Noah hooked me up with the joint, and I’ma play it. More on the dudes at Duck Down Records.

Oh – now for the important shit. The podcast award. See, apparently the Mixtape Show managed to beat out a few thousand other wack-ass music podcasts in order to get nominated in the top 5 of all music podcasts (including rock, electronic, etc) on the net, PERIOD.

Meaning that if we win, we are officially the best motherfucking music podcast on the planet, period. Not that we already didn’t know that, but it’s good to prove things to people sometimes, yaoming?

MIXTAPE EPISODE 30

This show concept for this week’s rap podcast basically came up when Ike Eyes sent me a copy of the Propane Piff mixtape. Trust me, when you hear Ag shouting over the top of some old crack era S.O.S. band shit, you know you’re in for an experience. Not only that, though, but there’s a freestyle from my man Respect up in here, as well as an old Smoke and Numbers joint that y’all prolly ain’t heard, either. Start the track and follow along…

Agallah - Whoop Ya Head f/ 50 Cent. Yes, the almighty Fiddy shows up on this joint, which makes sense if you know your history. Don’t hate. If anyone somehow forgot that despite the Top 40 shit, 50 actually has bars, you’re about to get reminded.

Agallah - So High (prod. Sid Roams). Instant fucking classic right here. I don’t know much about this Roams cat but this is a dope cut. Check this one out.

Agallah - Thanks to Me feat Camron, Sin Sizzerb. More of that piano-type shit. I’m not sure why it is that the less angry your production is, the more gangster your shit sounds, but this is an example of that phenomenon. Cam definitely has a presence in his section, and Ag rips his up.

Agallah - Don Bishop f/ Jay Z (prod Agallah). Hey, if Swizz can do it, so can he. Okay, so it’s only Jay on the hook, but the old blaxploitation movie soundtrack feel is hot, as is the flow. Again, there’s about 10 other joints I could have put on here, but you’re gonna have to get your own copy to hear them.

Numbers (of Smoke & Numbers) – Smile. We had a solo joint from Smoke a while back, so we gotta give Numbers his chance to shine on this one. I’ve had the Color of Money mixtape for a minute now and I’d almost forgotten that I meant to drop this one on y’all. You can pick up their latest mixtape (that I know of) at mixunit.

So that’s it for Episode 30. I know a lot of y’all are trying to figure out how to pick up your own copy, so here’s the rundown in bullet points because I know a lot of you are slow.

Details/ Non-Small Print:

1. I have a limited (!!) number of mixtapes to give out.
2. I am sending them for free. I am paying for postage.
3. I am making the choice as to who gets a mixtape and who doesn’t. Everyone has an equal chance, unless I arbitrarily decide that I don’t like you, then you don’t have any chance at all.
4. I’m not necessarily opposed to mailing outside the U.S., but if you’re outside the lower 48, it might be a bit tougher for you.

You have a few options as for entering:

1. Call the mixtape hotline: (310) 928 MTSN, and leave a message telling me why you want a copy. Leave your number or email, and I’ll contact you if I chose you and get your mailing address then.
2. Email me (see my email address in the contact info section) and do the same.

Ways to improve your chances:

1. If you’re leaving a message, make it interesting. Freestyle, do something non-boring because I’ll delete your shit like I deleted those 30 fake emails from that one promoter pretending to be 30 different fans of some terrible rapper. I see you, son, and your shit don’t work. So stop.

2. Promote the show. This doesn’t mean spamming people, this means post up on a message board somewhere where people would be interested in the show, tell your friends, etc. If you want to shoot me a link where you’ve linked up the show, that might be a good thing for you to do. I’m just saying.

East Flatbush Project f/ Stress and Dox - Who I’m Is. Now, I’m not going to pretend to understand whatever sort of strange sub-grammar would lead someone to decide that “Who I’m Is” is coherent English, but that’s not really my place. My place is, however, to tell you that this joint is dope. Thus: “This joint is dope”. There. (a little more info on EFP here).

Sean Price – Jamaican. I can’t recall the original sample used here, but I know this is a throwback to BDP‘s “Stop the Violence”. Of course, when the chorus runs “Grab your dicks and let the clip pop”, you know that the Teacha‘s message isn’t entirely intact here. That said, the joint is hot. And if you haven’t heard of Sean P yet, well, I don’t know what to tell you. I guarantee you’ll get the hook caught in your head. Ike Eyes f/ Agallah - On My Grind. If any of the songs in this episode could incite a riot, it’s probably this one. Agallah is on production and lends some bars, and of course my man Ike Eyes comes through with some lyrics that are at once hard and esoteric. You can’t really argue with that. East Flatbush Project – Pregame 2005. Respect to Spencer (for hire!) for connecting with me, and for getting this joint out to me. Edgy, nervy, paranoid type beats and lyrics…I listen to this one whenever the feds drive by. This one definitely wasn’t on the 12″…

Pok Dog f/ K.L.A.S.S.i.C. – On Lean. I really couldn’t close out a show without doing some of this West Coast thang. Remember that banger that I started Episode 22 of with? This is that same dude, representing the Ox (the Ox, right Pok?). I haven’t heard more than a few of Pok’s joints, but from what I’ve seen, he consistently puts out versatile, hard material. Alabama stand the fuck up! The first time I played this joint in at my flat, the whole place blew up. You should have seen it. I had to loop this track like five times before everyone finally shut the fuck up and let me go back to the new Jay Chou single. I actually heard about this duo immediately after I had left the 334. Rewind my selectah! What y’all know bout the reprise? Yes this is the same joint as the first one, but it’s the slightly more spacey remix. This time though, MED off Stones Throw and Mr. Mondell of The Faculty show up for guest raps. This beat might not have the sheer window smashing quality of the original, but I dig the more laid back synth string instrumental just the same. Plus the guest lyrics are pretty much cute as fuck.
