MIXTAPE 63 – BEATJACKS AND REMIXES

So I talked a lot in this episode. Hopefully nobody minds. Here’s a few notes before we begin:

[1] The footage for MTV’s 10 Greatest Hip-Hop Groups of All Time is here, artificial and the “postgame” footage, prostate including Run and Chuck D musing briefly on the effect of crack on hip-hop, buy information pills is here.

[2] And yes, the Mixtape Show was listed in Q Magazine‘s (UK) Best 100 Places To Get Free Music Online. #1 in the podcast section. They said that I was “lively”.

[3] I do think that the Beastie Boys made some nice songs, especially productionwise. I wouldn’t call myself a big fan, but they did their thing in their day. Plus, they were the featured group on during the official Mixtape Show Caucasian Appreciation Show. And around here, that counts for a lot.

And now for that playlist.

(instrumental – myspace.com/truestatiks.)

Hasan Insane – Hustler’s Clarity feat Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. Kid is nice with the beats. This one is just one of those that just works. Thanks for the tip, oux. myspace.com/hasaninsane

DJ Lt Dan – Justify My Thug feat Jay-Z (b/w G Thang). I can’t remember who first remixed Jay’s Black Album, but this cat is definitely one of the earlier and more memorable ones. That acapella release also spawned the Grey Album, which in turn tipped the white liberal media off to this whole “remixing” and “hippity-hop” thing, at which point it started to get sort of lame. myspace.com/ltdanmixtapes.

J*Davey – Untitled 1. Jack of J*Davey on this one. Free shoutout in the next episode to the first one to identify the instrumental. jdaveybaby.com.

Paul Dateh – Violin Demo. I’m not giving out the whole thing, but the last half of this was too good not to share. Paul and I connected some time ago, and he mentioned that he got down on the violin. Dude ain’t kidding. As much as some of you like to hate on Timbo (did anyone see that Scott Storch diss video? wow), the second half of this is pretty ridiculous. Paul, you have any more of this? Also, my friend walked into the studio when I was recording this and he said he thought I was watching a Hong Kong soap opera because of those last few licks. No offense, I get down with that HK drama shit. myspace.com/pauldateh.

Jimmie Reign – Keep Pushin’. Everybody’s doing Kick Push remixes nowadays, but this is a pretty original take on the joint. Hi, helly. jimmiereignworld.

Trump - Kick Push. Yeah, this is the same dude you heard on the last episode, and it’s not the last you’ll hear of him. myspace.com/shamanwork

Lupe Fiasco – Kick Push (Ro Blvd Remix). This beat was actually hot enough to make me wear out Lupe’s joint all over again. laffytaffyrotsyourteeth.com

Dead Prez – Turn Off Your Radio (Wale Remix). I’ve seriously been holding on to this track for months. The Black Gold mixtape is some serious shit, and this is probably my favorite joint on there. If this track doesn’t catch at least five rewinds in your mp3 player, something’s wrong with you. Get off my internet. myspace.com/shamanwork

And that’s it for this episode. As always, holler in the comments section and let me know what you’re thinking on this one.

MIXTAPE HIP HOP PODCAST EPISODE 44

I’m taking a break from the concept episodes for a minute – In lieu of that, decease I’ve decided to just provide you with some fucking FLAMES instead. Hope you don’t mind. And before it gets old, noun let me remind you to please motherfucking VOTE FOR THE MiXTAPE SHOW today, opisthorchiasis tomorrow, and every day.

East Flatbush Project feat Stress - CSI. I guess this episode could technically be a concept episode, if the concept was “songs I played on repeat for like half an hour”. Let me just say that the instrumental on this joint just might be my favorite East Flatbush joint – which, given my opinion of Spencer (for hire!)’s work, says a lot. And the lyrics? Here’s a gem from Stress -

You step up for your crew and defend them with a verse but/
Challenge Stress and you will end up with a nurse/
Better yet, it’s probably worse, you’ll probably end up in the earth
In a casket with your spirit getting sent up with a curse

See, there’s threats of violence, and then there’s threats of violence. I had to pull up like five times to hear those bars on repeat. Trust me, this one song is reason enough for the download. Check out myspace.com/theeastflatbushproject.

Lupe Fiasco – I Gotcha. Everybody seems to be in love with Lupe after his skateboard joint, which I can’t really argue with. The beat on this one isn’t quite as catchy as Kick Push, but I think the lyricism more than balances that out. It’s sort of weird writing about Lupe, because most of what he says comes off as cute rather than anything else. I mean, come on – the soap bar bars? Damn. But you can’t deny the sound. Shouts to Lee at Foundation for the hookups. lupefiasco.com.

Kway Floss – Its Like That. This marginally 9th Wonder-esque beat edged out another actual 9th production (GET A NEW SNARE SAMPLE HOMIE), so that should probably give you an idea of the skills here. I’d never heard of Kway before this, but I’m definitely interested in hearing more. Check him out at the suspiciously named the-ins.com, or the video for this joint here.

Wise Intelligent – Genocide. Yes, the Wise Intelligent from Poor Righteous Teachers. Born Free hollered at me with some of his newest shit, and you know I had to jump on that. If you’ve been listening since Black Business, the new flow dude has is a little suprising – almost jarring, just like the subject material. Do yourself a favor and listen to this a couple times. You know the politics never left rap. myspace.com/wiseintelligent

Masta Killa feat Ghostface and Raekwon - It’s What It Is. Ohhhhhh shit – the kung fu intro. Anyone know what this movie is from? I really want to see some motherfuckers go up against some guns with motherfucking steel darts. Kinda bizarre horn loop on this joint, which I think is a B-side from Masta’s newest release. I mean, Ghost and Rae are here. What other reason do you need to listen? mastakilla.net.

Yep. And that’s it for this week. Shouts to Corey at hiphopruckus.net, funky49 and nerdcorehiphop.com, and Dr Tron from theaestheticpoetic.blogspot.com (this last one is a street fashion/culture jumpoff, highly recommended reading) for showing love recently – oh yeah, and can’t forget Clyde from prohiphop as well.

And once again, make sure to vote for the internet’s best rap / hip-hop podcast at www.podcastawards.com. The method once again:

1. Click that link there -> VOTE
2. Find the Podsafe Music category – it’s the 9th from the top, on the left.
3. Click the “Mixtape Show” button, then scroll down and enter yr email and hit “submit”
4. Check your email, and click that link.

Then do that shit every day. The Mixtape Show is the only hip-hop show in the running, and it would be dope as fuck to show these doubters that not only is the Mixtape Show the hottest hip-hop jumpoff on the net, but we can beat out every other motherfucking genre.

Hit up the comments, hit up the phonelines at 310-928-MTSN, post up on forums, myspace, etc.

And I’m serious about those reviews – artists, holler at kucrdex [at] gmail [dot] com. If you’re interested in reviewing, also holler at me.

Um, I think that’s it. Let me know how y’all felt this one, and be on the lookout next week for a collabo/guest episode with the infamous DJ Nik Bean out of Los Angeles and Bishop Lamont. No, really.

MIXTAPE EPISODE 35

Been busy. I’ll spare you the details, clinic but it involved a lot of alcohol and me losing some things necessary to make the show. I’m back on board now, erectile though, prosthesis kids, so protect ya necks.

Lupe Fiasco – Kick Push. It’s always nice to see people breaking down barriers for Black people. I remember when I was younger, it was all but illegal to get on a skateboard if you were darker than oh, say, Denise on the Cosby Show. Considering that Lupe probably has at least a year or so on me, it seems that dude was really just on some of that Rosa Parks civil disobedience shit. I’ll be damned if any (hypothetical) son of mine is ever caught on a fucking plywood board with wheels strapped to it, though. lupefiasco.com

Wordsworth – Run (Oddissee Remix). I got a double CD from Wordsworth a bit ago – I forget who sent it to me, but good for them. (by the way, peace to David at Halftooth). It’s funny, because even though dude has people like Da Beatminaz lacing up tracks for him, the second CD – the Mirror Music Oddissee Remixes – spent an awful lot longer in my Volvo CD player. Words seems to be a big fan of the epic story type joint, so if you’re into that, I’d recommend checking more of his shit out. halftooth.com.

Gnarls Barkley – Crazy. I heard this was on KROQ. I don’t give a fuck. Come on, it’s Cee-lo. Also, I felt like this was a good way to publicly apologize to Dangermouse for publicly calling his last project an abortion. gnarlsbarkley.com

Lil Wayne aka Weezy featuring Snyp Life. Okay, enough of that soft shit for the kids. Here’s where I bring the funk. Weezy kills it, as does Snyp. This is off the latest Sin Sizzerb mixtape. sizzerb.com.

Sin Sizzerb feat Camron, Bezel, and Tom Gist – Thanks To Me (Certified). Oh, shit. Yes, you’ve heard the other version with my man Agallah, now check out the motherfucking remix. I don’t think I need to say much about this one – if you need a reason to download this episode, this right here is probably it. Sin, get at me with that new shit… sizzerb.com

Scan - Freestyle. If y’all think you can do better and want to be featured on the freestyle section next week, hit up the hotline voicemail – (310) 928 MTSN.That’s it for this episode. Coming soon, be on the lookout for even more crazy shit on the hottest hip-hop mixtape podcast you’ve ever seen, ever.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. I’m putting together an all-instros episode in beattape fashion. If you got beats, get at me. kucrdex [at] gmail [dot] com. rolllllll
