MIXTAPE 89 – HELLO CANADA

MIXTAPE 89 – HELLO CANADA

So I got interviewed on the Canada Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio One, recipe on a show called Search Engine. Haven’t listened just yet, ailment but it’s about the Jena 6. Shouts to Jesse for making that connection.

By the way, buy if you’re looking for the Jena 6 episode, you can click here to see the original post.

This episode, we’re pushing forward with more good music.

Tracklist:

Jaylib - Mission Remix. There’s not really too much to be said that hasn’t been said about this duo. Dilla on the rhymes as well, and as you expect, he tears it up. The strings in this cut are ridiculous. stonesthrow.com.

Specifics - My Tunes. Straight outta Vancouver – and with this, I believe that I’ve exhausted my supply of Specifics tracks. For some reason I found this on my iPod when I was still in China, and jammed it for like three days straight – then I accidentally deleted my hard drive. They just really have this jazz loop thing down. In case you hadn’t noticed, I like this group. Go Canada. myspace.com/specifics.

UGK - You Don’t Know Me. Wondering why UGK gets so much respect back home? This is one reason. Thanks to cocaineblunts. myspace.com/ugk.

Phonte - Interlude: Wack Freestyles. I couldn’t resist this one. It’s just so…meta. Come on. He’s making fun of mixtapes. And this is a mixtape! Get it? Okay yeah but a good sign of a poor rapper is someone who can’t string together a decent demo without using an established song as a crutch. I’ve got no problem with unofficial remixes and bootlegs (check the archives on this very hip-hop podcast) but unless you have a specific reason for doing otherwise, find your own beats. If you need help with that, ask me – I know plenty of talented producers. myspace.com/mickboogie.

Gif - Alicia Keys Freestyle. And that prior thing was in no way related to this cut, because a) it’s a different flip, and b) it’s hot. Gif, could you explain your name to us? myspace.com/dagif

Wise Intelligent – Go With Me. Another storytelling joint. I won’t ruin this one for you, but check the very end of this cut. myspace.com/wiseintelligent

Polyrhythm Addicts
– It’s My Life feat Phonte.
I was a bit late on this one, but with DJ Spinna on production, this one’s an easy call. Dig what Phonte is saying about independence as well. myspace.com/thepolyrhythmaddicts.

And the bonus cut: Suburb - Synth + Strings (snippet). Again, the kid is ridiculous. I’ve got more from dude. Anyone want more? myspace.com/suhburb.

Intro beat: Specifics - Life’s Work
Outro beat: Mathematics - Untitled.

And that’s this week. More coming very very soon. Any requests?

  1. yeah canada.

shout outs to the jizz-knock, the rascalz, bc budz, barrie hydro, kardinal, edmonton, and TO.

  2. Man, i needed this shit. Somehow managed to loose my ipod. Stressed with no music for my mental stability..it’s not pretty. You saved me with this specifics track. I remember hearin it on a dif ep..you’ve also played another song by him, but i didn’t get the track listing when it came out. Lyrics were somethin like, “what up, this is doo wop. Stick around til the end, get your moolah….but in any event, you the dutchess”. PLEASE tell me what it’s called, i needs it. Yes, MORE suburb please! Thanks, great ep.

  3. Nice tracks man….Good to see some more Suburb on this mix….

I must have been hiding under a stone, because I’ve been sleeping on this, and haven’t really been up to date…

But, I’ve been doing my homework on some of his stuff, so I’m catchin’ up! – The guys beats are slick, man…..and that Brasil beat tape…..hilarious!!

Likin the mathematics stuff too…..good work (and big up Canada!!)

    Keep it up….

    M

  4. THIS MUST BE THE PLACE CUZ I’M HERE!! Good lookin’ on episode 85 I
still owe u sum comix which are going through spell check status still but will be done soon,(i’m a product of public schools what can i say) always diggin’ the eps! My blockbuster movie picks this week are City of Violence
and Oldboy! hot ass martial arts movies! HIYAH!!

  5. sc – kardinal. Man, that is a name I haven’t heard in a minute. Any idea what he’s up to now?

Sara – no way! no repeats, ever! Scared me for a second – unless I’m mistaken, I’ve never dropped this particular Specifics track on here. I’m gonna get that track ID for you, though. Sounds like somebody needs an iPod holder or whatever. I’m seriously about to downgrade my iPod nano to a shuffle just so I can clip it and run. I bought some hipster jeans and you can’t fit anything in those pockets.

Agent M – yeah. Actually I think you were right on the Brasil tape. Dude speaks Portuguese, so you had it the first time.

I’ve said it before – Suburb is kinda the truth.

Any more requests for more Suburb? Maybe I can ring him up and con him into giving me some more exclusives.

  6. Hey this is Think Twice, the producer for Specifics.

In response to Sara’s question, those lyrics are from “Take Me Back”, off of our first album “Lonely City”.

Um…a little plug…both our albums “Lonely City” and “II” are up on iTunes worldwide, as well as my solo record (which features Golden Boy from Specifics) “With A Loop And Some Swing”.

Glad everybody is feeling the Canadian hip-hop…but DEX!!!! Where’s Kardi, or Sauks, or Ro Dolla, or Choc, or Tara Chase, or Butta Babies….I can keep going…you need part two!!!!

  7. Think Twice – that was quick. Thanks for the ID on that. Anyone wanting to check out that cut he mentioned, you can hear that track on episode 31. PS: damn it’s hot.

Twice – okay, real talk? If you can link me up with a few of these artists you mention, I will put together an official Mixtape Show: Canada Edition.

  8. i’ll reiterate:

    82, 74, 63, 52, 51, 50, 49, 46, 45, 43, 36, 37, 38, 41, 42.

mixtapeshow episodes that are fun to listen to high.

this one doesn’t make the cut…i’m keeping a running tally. 42 is the best one to start with if you’re new to getting blunted and rolling through your podcasts.

    today’s non-mixtapeshow honorable mention/recommendation goes out to:

    ghostface killa – iron man

    and

gza the genius – beneath the surface

    -s

  9. for those anticipating more, my mixtapeshow exclusive EP will be available here (and ONLY HERE) in october.

in addition, donwill (from tanya morgan) and i have an album dropping this fall and if che grand’s album ever gets released, there’s a couple of my tracks on there too.

dex is the homie, so he gets all the exclusives. stay tuned and thanks for the support!

  10. sc – hahaha! Honorable mentions, even! I guess I gotta check those two out as well.

suhBURBIAN. Word? Am I getting paid for this?

kidding. we’ll put something together. See what happens when you ask nicely kids?

  11. Peace, yeah man to answer your question, my name stands for Great, Influential, Figure. My boys fool around and call me God is forever. Tight line up fam.

  12. Talat1 – I don’t see why not. Let me see what I can dig up, or who I can email..

Gif – I was wondering about that. I figured you couldn’t possibly have named yourself after the .gif format.

  13. Hi Dex,
