MIXTAPE SHOW 69 – THE ROCK EPISODE

Yo. Welcome back to the program. I’ve actually got an interview/feature in the works (I’ll give you two guesses as to what the topic is), but in the meantime, here’s another concept episode.

This time, it’s all about rock-influenced tracks. Now I obviously could have gone with mashups (thanks for the tip on that Modest Mouse+Weezy track, Robin), but that would be cheating. Check the tracklist, and if you need more information on the DVD giveaway, check the post below.

Track List.

Intro I – Black Sabbath.
Game Theme/Intro II – Patrick Goble – New Shred.

Hevi Medal – 730 [dex ADHD edit]. The video for this cut is wild on some serious skurry insanity shit. If you want the full version of the song, check out their myspace page. myspace.com/mophevimedal.

Deaf In The Family – Southern Man feat Bavu Blakes. Apparently the original sample was what inspired the penning of Sweet Home Alabama, but fuck that song. Mr. Bavu, who I think dropped the “Blakes” thing, breaks down some race/class knowledge on some college-educated shit. You can listen to the whole album on the site, deafinthefamily.com.

Lil’ Flip – Rockstar. This song is pretty ridiculous. But don’t act like it isn’t catchy. This is why I love mixtapes – you always get these ridiculous-ass joints in the end of the CD that are better than half the rest of the tape. myspace.com/lilflip.

RJD2 – Exotic Talk. Please, Def Jux, don’t sue me. I have been fucking with RJD2‘s shit for a very long time now. I liked The Horror and alla that, but really Since We Last Spoke was the one that spent the most time in my Volvo, including that weepy-ass “Making Days Longer”. I hear he has a new album out, which I unfortunately haven’t heard, but I’m hearing positive things about it. He’s actually on tour now, so some of you herbs might want to catch him live. myspace.com/rjd2.

Deaf In The Family – Mr Blue Sky feat Scavone. I never thought someone would have the balls to flip this one, but these dudes actually did a pretty fucking bang-up job on this one. After you finish listening to the show, and entering the contest, get thee to a record store and cop the original ELO version. 7 minutes of overwrought, multithematic, hairsprayed rock godditude. Can I get a amen. deafinthefamily.com.

DCNY - Skye Blues. See that? Mr Blue Sky, Sky Blues. I am really, really clever, ouxu. Really clever. This is another group I used to rock back on my college show, and for some reason when I was mixing this show down the CD just jumped out at me. Recommended for the boom-bap fans. myspace.com/tresmons.

Outro I – Black Sabbath
Outro II – Calamine – Sealab 2021 Theme.

Swimmers – The Unofficial Swimmers Bootleg feat Lil Jon, E-40 and Keak da Sneak. Actually I don’t have a title for this. The Swimmers are not responsible for this soundclash. Thank you, nxt. myspace.com/swimmersband.

And that’s all for this one. What did you think?

MIXTAPE 62 – RETURN OF THE BOUNCE TAPE

Due to popular demand, I’ve resurrected the Bounce Tape format for another edition. That means that everybody’s favorite spastic, button-mashing, hey-guys-watch-me-play-with-the-eq-for-no-reason style is back.

This time, you’re in for some sped-up crunk, electro, hyphy, funk, and grime, not necessarily in that order. I’d write more but keep it 100 it’s fucking 3 AM and it is sleepytime soon.

And remember, playing the show from the player above will get you a lower-fidelity file (but shorter loadtime), but if you subscribe to this hip-hop podcast(free), you’ll get the high quality file.

Check the playlist below:

Zongamin – Bongo Song (Jackos Remix). While the promo I got did list Vice on the sleeve, I guess this is release is more accurately an Ed Banger jumpoff. So Ed Banger, don’t sue me. Nice release, by the way. myspace.com/edbangerrecords.
Bun B - Get Throwed (Instrumental). myspace.com/bunbofugk
Dizzee Rascal - Stand Up Tall (Acapella) dizzeerascal.co.uk
Soulja Boy – I got me some Bathing Apes. I’m not totally certain why I liked this song so much – joint just got stuck in my head. This kid is still in high school, and the production values kinda reflect that, but I’m not going to front, the hook is cute. myspace.com/souljaboytellem.
Trump – The Misters. Dude sounds absolutely nothing like anyone else on Shaman Work’s roster that I know of, but this cut ain’t bad. myspace.com/shamanwork
DJ Gyngyvytus – Snaps Out. I’m about 90% certain dude made this on a tracker. From what I can tell, this is a remix of “Knives Out”, but I never really fucked with Radiohead like that. Feel free to verify/refute this.
Trick Daddy – Tuck Ya Ice. I forget who he took the bar on the hook from. thug.com.
Keak Da Sneak – Get Hyphy 07. This is such a blatant rip of “Wait” that it’s not even funny. The song’s cute though. myspace.com/keakdasneak.
Dogg Pound featuring Snoop Dogg – Vibe With a Pimp. www.dpgrecordz.com.
Federation – She Goes. It’s the hook that does it for me on this one. Federation is just on some wild shit recently. Remember “Stunna Glasses?” www.myspace.com/thefederation.
Breakwater – Release The Beast (sampled by Daft Punk for Robot Rock) – shouts to Palmsout for the Daft Punk post I stole this track from.
Team Shadetek – Brooklyn Anthem feat 77Klash and JahDan. You all have to see the video for this. It’s fucking bananas. Shouts to Alex. sound-ink.com.

Hopefully you’re all still with me on this one. Drop comments, let me know what you felt about this one. As always, spread it around, etc.

MIXTAPE EPISODE 55 feat BARTHOLOMEW JAMES

This week, I (dex digital) take a break and Bartholomew James of the Quiet Storm on KPLT 92.7FM makes his hip-hop podcast debut.

Dem Franchize Boyz – Lean Wit It (Don Vito remix). Yes, you know this song, and yes, it’s a simple remix. But that won’t stop you from playing it out. majormoneyentertainment.com.

DK – Mask On. Apparently Bartholomew got a little confused, because this isn’t Luther, this is one of the strongest players in the East Coast mixtape game, DK. If you don’t listen to the words, you might actually miss what’s going on. myspace.com/dk730

Lil Jon and the Eastside Boys – Get Low (Ghosteo Remix). Another ridiculously simple remix, but I mean come on. Between the Sheets + anything = instant classic. I’m not sure where this “Gap Band” nonsense came from, but I can see why Bartholomew James would pick this cut out. myspace.com/ghosteo.

E-40 and Keak da Sneak – Tell Me When To Go (Trackademics remix). It’s hard to match the original, but if any of the myriad remixes that came out are close, this one’s right up there with them. myspace.com/trackademics.

Gwen Stefani, 4-Ize and Ludacris – Payback. Aaaaaand there goes our credibility. I’m actually not sure why Bartholomew played this one, considering that he didn’t even like it and he swore to me beforehand that he wouldn’t put any white people on the show. On the other hand, y’all know my weird tastes in music, so it’s not that I mind it going in here. 4-Ize has been a little slow with releases recently, maybe he’s working on something nowadays…soularsausage.com.

outro track: MR. MAKK – which is Kenny Keys’ band – Phrase 72. I had this one sitting on my desk, I’m guessing that ol’ BJ picked it up and took a fancy to it. myspace.com/kennykeys.

Well, I’d like to thank everyone for putting up with Bartholomew James this week – assuming I get over my cold and get my shit together in time, I should be back next week with a normal episode. Mr. James asked if you all could holler at him with some comments though, so if y’all feel like it, feel free to drop some here.

For the uninitiated, the mixtape show has a partnership with Larceny Entertainment that lets yall get in on this Grand Larceny Radio show shit. TK and Breezy pretty much got the movement that is the New West sewed up, and I personally got the internet goin nuts. So when you put that together with the toughest fucking rap podcast this side of New Zealand, you get what you’re about to listen to. Here’s the tracklist for you suckers:

Young Hootie and J Boy – OT Work
El Dorado Red – Murdered
Coolwadda – La, La
AB feat. 50 Cent – Infrared
Flatlinerz – Watts Stomp
Mr Town – The Town (Ay)
Balance and Keak da Sneak – What Up
Big Wy and Young Breezy – I want In
Young Hootie and TJ Santana – Easy Come
Black TK – 86 Crack(It’s Back)
XL Middleton – Zoom Zoom

So if you’re up on your West Coast LA/Bay type shit, you should recognize at least a good majority of the names in here. AB comes through with some shit and brings the relatively unknown 50 Cent with him on the hook, Mr. Town comes back with some more shit, Breez drops the first bars with Wy – I’d heard about this but hadn’t heard it yet. El Dorado is up in there, and I just heard (as will you when you download the joint) that he’s making moves with Universal…congratulations on that El Dog – we’ll link up for that damn interview at some point. Hootie’s joint with TJ Santana is probably the most radio-unfriendly song I’ve heard him on, but that’s what the internet is for. And then TK comes at us with some shit that you really probably aren’t equipped to understand, and XL!! what’s up mang!

And of course, Balance and Keak da Sneak, Coolwadda, Flatlinerz, shit, why are you still reading? If you’re trying to stay up on this West Coast street shit, you really need to go download this thing.

I’ve included the high fidelity versions here as downloads. You can listen to the version above in the browser all day long, but if you want a more high quality file, download these and use them in your mp3 player and whatnot.
