MIXTAPE 74 – JAZZ EDITION

MIXTAPE 74 – JAZZ EDITION

Sorry for the slacking last week – actually I wasn’t slacking, sick I just got hella (yes hella) busy. I’m caught up on my email, prescription summer is coming, there’s hella (yes hella) new things in the works around here, and I am definitely feeling things right now.

Notes from the show:

Yes Gs and Es, there is now a Mixtape Show Facebook Group. Click here to join, add your favorite episodes to your profile, network, promote your tunes/movement/whatever, or just talk rap music. You can even grab episodes to play on your profile (shouts to Numair)!

The Video Podcast. I am now making this official. I am slowly assembling a team of people and this shit is really going down. The livest hip-hop audio podcast is about to become the livest audio and video podcast on the webterfuge. Please believe me. If you have videos – indie artists, labels, whatever – now is the time to make me aware of them. I’ll post an official solicitation soon – but for the time being, get ready.

And now, the tracklist.
(intro: Herbie Hancock – Chameleon (Jeremy Ellis remix)

E da Boss and Nick Andre – Things Change feat Nebulus. I have been meaning to put this one out for so long it’s not even funny. The mixtape is definitely nice. Nick – do you guys still like me out there? Let’s build. slepton.net

Hell Razah – Project Jazz feat Talib Kweli and MF Doom. I’m not sure who produced this one, but it’s quite good. Even Talib, who I have been absolutely not liking recently, comes correct on this joint. Shouts to Erin for the link on this track. myspace.com/razahrubies.

O.C. – Point of Viewz (snippet). Wow, where have I heard this? myspace.com/ocdaphenomenon.

Quasimoto – Seasons Change feat Madlib. Damn, I forgot how hot this record was. There’s not a lot of artists out there that can get away with some of the weird things that Madlib does with his records – I remember being really frustrated with “Another Demo Tape” because I didn’t want to hear that lady singing about cleaning kitchens or whatever the fuck tomfoolery Mad put in there, I wanted to hear people rap over the goddamn beat because it was hot. This joint though – consider it a preview to the Summer Mixtape, 07 edition. myspace.com/lordquas.

MF Doom – Deep Fried Frenz. MM..Food was a pretty ridiculous album. I remember reading somewhere that Doom had made beats by just taping shit off of BET Jazz commercials. myspace.com/mfdoom.

Lords of the Underground
– Lord Jazz Hit Me One Time (Make It Funky).
Yep. Kinda the alternate/b-side version of the version whose instrumental you hear in the outro. myspace.com/lordsoftheunderground1.

So there’s this week! And I meant it about the video podcast thing – any ideas, holler at a ballar in the comments section.

  1. Yo..what up Dex?
    Cool show this week.
Overall I dug it..but I REALLY dug that damn Lords of the Underground joint..that will get bumped alot in the future.

    Peace.
    Greg

  2. A video podcast would be bad ass. Don’t forget to include some music videos..!

  3. Greg – good looking out! – yeah, I’d forgotten all about that Lords track until I actually went into the studio to record this one.

Mr Underground – DAMN. I am going to have to get at these dudes just on the strength of their tracks. I’m not sure what the “death” part of “death jazz” is supposed to be (this reminds me of them Seatbelts dudes though), but it is hot.

Chris – Yep, the music videos will definitely be in effect.

  4. Yo wats going on dex, I must say that I rather enjoyed this jazz edition. Anyway, Kanye west has a mixtape ‘Cant tell me nothin’ which to be honest isnt very good, however it features a tune produced by 88 keys called viagra stay up which maybe you can hunt down and feature on your show. Also I think that it is important that you check out some of my brothers music because I am fed up of these boring uk hiphop tracks which sound american and wrongly represent the music scene over here, its not a question of sounding UK its about good music so check it out.

    peace

looking forward to the video podcasts

    Duval

  5. Hey man, glad you liked it. Yeah, I’m not sure where the ‘death’ comes in either, but it might have something to do with those crazy saxophone solos… But yeah, glad you liked it
    :)
    Peace

  6. Duval – “which to be honest isn’t very good” HAHAHHAA. If I can track that particular track down, though, I’ll have to see what’s good with that one. And on your brother’s joints, get at me about that! If you use facebook, hit up the facebook group and drop the links/info there too. I do hear about that a lot, though – a lot of UK rappers causing static over trying to sound American, switching up their accents, etc. I’m only so up on this shit – how much of that is really going on over there?

cathy – you’ve heard more of the Unwrapped CDs than I have!

  7. lol on dat demo joint! Chill Jazzy Podcast, fo real man, it waz LAVA!
I know the video show is gonna be badass
how u gonna do the videos, are they gonna be just the ones you recieve
or are vyou gonna grab sum from the net?
cuz i got sum links to sum dope ass music videos
    holla at me
    B-EZ

    brer

  8. elliot – HAHAHHAHA

Brer – videowise, I’m going to be getting submissions on those the same way I do music. But if you have some videos that you know of that are already out, link em up and I’ll see what I can do to make that connection!

  9. Well yeh its a problem so I listen to a lot of more underground experimental stuff but the problem with that is you get some great instrumentals with rappers who seem to lack charisma – what i want to hear is great powerful instrumentals (gil scott heron/madlib/9th wonder etc) with a rapper who can add something to the track (imagine ludacris or busta rhymes covering a madlib beat..) so thats why I end up listning to so much MF Doom because he can provide that kind of vibe. Anyway with regards to my brothers tracks I have one of his beats on my page http://www.myspace.com/duvaltimothy so check that out and see if you like it.

    peace

  10. O M G
me haces sentir baracunata con este estilo tuyo sr lee

it seems like u just wont stop throwin it down like that

    im REALLY into this mixtape!

  11. Duval Timothy – shit son. everything on that page is official, artwork included. Have your brother get at me, I will definitely find a spot for him on the show.

And I feel you on the charisma thing – people act like this underground rap shit doesn’t have its own issues. But we could talk about that all day.

cathy – good looking out! That particular song I had almost forgotten about until I was going through my old email and realized I still hadn’t used it!

    leena – lamer

  12. finally…dex is back.
I wasn’t feeling too much stuff on a single episode since #63

    keep em coming.

    peace.

  13. what up Dex! good lookin on the Nebulus track. Shoot me a email so i can get a copy of “The Singles” 12″ we did with Lyrics born & the one we have comin out with Gift Of Gab. Show sounds good!! Peace Nick Andre/Slept On Records

  14. sc – damn, that long? at least I’m back on track now!
Nick – no doubt, glad you got the word on this one. Check your inbox.
Mr U – HAHHAA – is that you? the track seems to break after 16 seconds, though.
