MIXTAPE 118 – CHANGE OF DIRECTION

MIXTAPE 118 – CHANGE OF DIRECTION

note: if you accidentally got ep 11 instead of 118 in your iTunes, hospital my bad. Things are fixed now. Try hitting the “update” button in your iTunes or podcast client. Sorry about that.

So I’ve been recently getting a little jealous of the popularity of the Soultronica Series on my own site. I’m not really sure how they do it, discount but somehow Digi (the 2109 version) and Brotherton manage to consistently make tapes that rival, or maybe exceed, my stuff. Even though it’s been over a year since there’s been a proper update to the Saga, I still get mail about it.

I mean, they’re 100 years in the future so I guess it makes sense that they’re more advanced than me, but still. So I figured I’d try my hand at something different, but still kept it 2009 with it. Hope you dig.

Tracklist

introlude: Ratatat - Nostrand

The Foreign Exchange - Daykeeper feat Muhsinah. Not really the way that I normally start things out, but I dig this one. Shouts to Aimee, by the way.

myspace.com/theforeignexchange.

Dwele – Untitled. At least, it didn’t have a title when I got it from Sweeney Kovar like a year ago.

myspace.com/dwele.

J*Davey -You Are. This one probably has a proper title by now, but this was the track name when I got it Got a title. Thanks Niels.
Niels.myspace.com/jdaveybaby.

Full Crate - She Was Fly feat Mar. Space out, man. The video for this is sort of cool, sort of scary.

myspace.com/fullcrate.

Dwele – Workin’ On It. This hits like 4 classics in the space of about a minute and a half.

Innosphere – Gotta Be Me. Brand new group formed by Mixtape Show alumni Kenny Keys and a new name (to me), Nina Rae. Sort of raw on the mastering process, but I dig this one. I was actually about to put an old Z’hane remix Kenny had sent me on this, but I got this and changed my mind. Looks like they have a site up here.

Jimmie Reign – 3 The Game. See, if I wouldn’t have pulled this out, I could have almost passed this off as something Brothertron put together. Couldn’t help it though. Also, everybody take this opportunity to make sure that you’re being real with your significant others people in general.

L.A.U.S.D. - iFeel feat Curly Tops and Nautica Jackets. Okay seriously these two need to stop with extra names. Generally the acceptable limit is 6ish official names plus 37 throwaways used in rap lyrics only ala Wu-Tang, but these two are about to get their alias privileges revoked just off the ridiculousity of their first picks. I’m not sure which is which, but Jack of J*Davey and Blu are both on here. Also L.A.U.S.D. as in the producers, not as in the system that screwed up countless friends (shout outs to the San Bernardino system too though). The more I listen to this the more I like it. Even though it’s sort of corny.

Suhburb - Gone Away feat Aniyia.
I’m running out of things to say about this guy. If you don’t get it, maybe you just don’t get it.

What You Know About Thatを聴いてからこれを聴き直してね。myspace.com/suhburb.

So that’s what it is. And yeah, no outro on this one, but after the last couple joints, I’m sure nobody’s exactly complaining.

Holler.

MIXTAPE 93 – LOVE

MIXTAPE 93 – LOVE

Yep. Halloween is right here, sildenafil and here I am with a love concept episode. You’ll see what it is soon enough. Let’s get into the…

Track List

Intro Instrumental: Deltron 3030 – Love Story. Intro featuring SuhBURB as the player mentor myspace.com/delthefunkyhomosapien.

Black Spade – To Serve With Love. Ridiculous-ass parachute pants mention in the intro aside, this is just simply a great track. I think this was my introduction to Black Spade back in mid 05 or so – then he shows up on the Nicolay release and rips that one apart too. myspace.com/blackspade

Unagi - Hello Girl. I think this is actually the track that inspired this episode, which I’ve been compiling and conceptualizing for longer than I’d care to admit (who knew – good, recent rap music about love is sort of hard to find). Unagi was kind enough to send me like his entire catalogue some time ago, and this was one of my jams. Thanks, fam. unagi442.com.

C Boogie + Kenyatta - Blackanese Invasion. Okay, I was joking about the title. This dances very close to the “ooh baby let me describe your silky brown skin / hips / good hair / etc” that generally gets the Further Adventures Of Lord Quas Track #13 Treatment* from me – but that’s just because I have an extremely low tolerance for that sort of thing. But – I liked this track. That says something. It’s good. myspace.com/cboogie.

* First one to explain that reference gets a shoutout in the next show. ell oh ell.

Little Brother – That Ain’t Love feat Jozeemo. I haven’t personally listened to all of “Get Back” yet, but word is (okay, my man B has been telling me every day on AIM) that “it’s brilliant” and “hasn’t left his CD player for a week” and “oh my god dex I woke up this morning and I made Orange Tang and I listened to the CD and it’s so good man you need to stop listening to that Bathin Apes shit and get with this good music”. Forsooth, I’ve been listening to Soulja Boy on repeat since September and haven’t had time for that LB. Anyone got the real thing and want to corroborate B’s findings? I do like this song.

Quasimoto – Hydrant Game. Speaking of Quas…This isn’t the Jaylib remix (which is great, and appears on the 2K8 soundtrack), but the original. If you don’t already own this release, you really need to get on it. Shouts to Stones Throw myspace.com/quasimoto.

Pharoahe Monch – The Trilogy Pt 2 feat Dwele (Soul Essentialz Re-Edit). Cut is mean. I still haven’t gotten to listen to this whole record, but remember this joint? Man. R Kelly who? myspace.com/pharoahemonch, and myspace.com/soulessentialz.

Marion Brown – ‘Don’t Take Your Love From Me (Solo Sax)’. 30 seconds. Yep.

Darondo – Didn’t I. I don’t know, you tell me. Darondo on Ubiquity.

Outro Instrumental: Three 6 Mafia – Don’t Call Me No More. Not that I would listen to the normal song much, but the beat is pretty cool.

MIXTAPE EPISODE 38

MIXTAPE EPISODE 38

All fucking right then. This week we’re getting into some more diverse shit. Check the tracklist, infection and download this shit. Don’t forget to subscribe to the show.

Dwele feat. Che Grand – Lady In Red. This joint is off of the “A Sensual Evening With Che Grand” mixtape. I don’t necessarily want a sensual evening with dude, but the music is generally pretty hot – this should give you an idea of what an indie label is actually capable of. I’d highly recommend copping the whole mixtape, if for no reason other than to hear the skits in between the tracks. Shit is off the wall. loudminoritymusic.com

Sa-Ra
feat. J. Dilla – Thrilla. Oh, how cute – the producer and the track rhyme! Speaking of rhymes, the recently departed genius fucking smashes the first verse of this shit. Body bling like C-3P0?!? ohhhhhhh shit. The man will be missed. Shouts to Jon and everyone else at Sound In Color for giving your boy free reign on this shit. soundincolor.com

Sa-Ra – Big Fame. Okay, I know I made a comment in the show that could be taken the wrong way. Don’t get it twisted – I mean “bootleg” in the best sense of the word. I’m not sure if their record is going to be like this, but the sampler is absolutely off the fucking wall with the skits. Dear Sa-Ra: please do more of that shit. Since when does having a cookout equal “being productive”? All of you can hate all you like, but if Sa-Ra isn’t a part of this new space funk black music shit, then I’m caucasian. soundincolor.com

The Jones Girls feat. Che Grand – Nights Over Egypt. Yes, once again, an unauthorized remix off of the Sensual Evening mixtape. This should show all of you random-ass kids rapping over dead Dre beats over and over again something – namely, that anybody can do that shit. If you can rap over that electro groove shit, you have my respect, and possibly a coveted spot on the hottest rap podcast in the history of womankind. Che is a weird dude, but you can’t deny the talent. Dude rips this joint gently, if that’s possible. Fuck it, just listen. loudminoritymusic.com

Ol’ Dirty Bastard – Drunk Game. As I said in the show, this track really blurs the line between genius and insanity – which pretty much sums up the majority of the dude’s oeuvre. I have no idea who produced this – it could be RZA, or it could be one of those Casio joints that play when you push the red “demo” button. If you actually forget for a moment that it’s Unique Ason singing, you’ll notice that the man actually kinda sons about 80% of R&B singers out there. Which is good!!! which is good…. wutangcorp.com

Tanya Morgan
– She Moved Outta Cincy. No, I haven’t revoked my strict “no female emcees” policy* (seriously, what the fuck is up with the ladies?! The second one of y’all hit me with some heat, I’ll put you on) – Tanya Morgan is actually three dudes that are labelmates of Mr. Che Grand. You might recognize Von Pea’s voice from a couple episodes ago. Is it just me, or is Loud Minority’s catalog full of joints about really horrible shit happening? Well, either way – TM is supposedly hot. If anyone wants more, I’ll see what I can do… loudminoritymusic.com

Damn, I managed to keep it short this week. Feel free to pass the information on, and be watching for the People Under The Stairs interview prolly next week. We all love hip-hop podcasts.

*No, really. For some reason the females have been slacking on me recently. Ladies please step your game up, thanks.
