Bounce Tape 3, pill ladies and gentlemen. The form continues to evolve. This episode takes you from reggae to hyphy to suburb rap to ragga-punk to crunk to damn son just listen.

And again, resuscitator there’s only about a week left to nominate the Mixtape Show for the best music podcast in the 2007 Podcast Awards. Collie Buddz – Come Around (Benja Styles remix). Infinitely tougher than the original. Pretty much all Philly DJ Benja Styles does is make these reggae remixes of these joints, often weeks before the general populace has even heard the damn things. Turf Talk – Broke Niggas (produced by Droop-E). Pilly at Nation of Thizzlam said it best – Turf Talk is one of the few people out there who can whisper an entire track without sounding really creepy (cf. Ying Yang Twins). myspace.com/turftalk

Cool Kids – Gold And A Pager. This is the joint right now. You are excused for not knowing about this hipster-rap duo, but you shall henceforth not be excused…from..uh…not knowing about them. Kids are already blowing up – it’s just a matter of time now. Complete cosign on this cut. Shout outs to Nelson for linking me up with the track. myspace.com/gocoolkids.

Some faceless Brazilian girl – Baile Funk 3. This was bootlegged off of the M.I.A. Piracy Funds Terrorism mixtape, again. I actually had another track I wanted to play that utilizes this same riddim, but I couldn’t find it and well you know how it goes. Only the people who actually speak Portuguese would notice anyway, and if you don’t – just assume they’re talking about something unbelievably nasty.
Team Knoc – Fruity Pebble Punk Rock. The chopped violin samples just matched too well here. I really wanted to give you the whole intro, but I couldn’t really justify doing it on this tape. Trust me – you need to track this cut down just to hear the intro. “Some people go dumb, but I go smart, because I’m in college”. Is there an official dance for this? myspace.com/teamknock.

M.I.A – Come Around Remix. At least, that’s what it’s called on her blog. It seems like it should be called “Come Down“, but M.I.A’s writing is basically incoherent. Either way, good track. myspace.com/mia.

Soulja Boy – Crank Dat Soulja Boy (Superman). Seriously, if you can’t appreciate how cool this song is, get off of my fucking website. You heard Soulja Boy in the last bounce tape, and really there’s just something amazing about the fact that this kid really isn’t a great rapper or producer, but he’s just got a knack for making catchy songs and dances that don’t really make any sense (watch me crank that robocop? is that a dance? yes it is). In other news, there is a dance called the Spongebob. myspace.com/souljaboy.

Meko, Dangerous Rob, Lix, Montana, Chaotic, and J-Tripz – Ballin (Atlanta Mix prod by Don Vito) (Mixtape Show ADHD edit). Shouts to Lix and Eddie from F-Pac records for this cut. I had to chop a couple verses out of this one. Favorite 16 on this track – the last 16 (J-Tripz?). Trust me. myspace.com/fpackokujin.

Ding Dong - Go Away (We Don’t Like You!). This song is ridiculous. Punk rock + dancehall + people telling somebody to go away = Recipe for awesome. Ripped from M.I.A.’s blog. myspace.com/dingdong.

Phat Kat – Cold Steel feat Elzhi (prod. J Dilla). I swear I don’t know where that “Blue Steel” slip came from. This came in on wax forever ago and I never quite got around to spinning it – until this morning. Haven’t had any Phat Kat on the show for a while. myspace.com/phatkatakaronniecash.

Rob O – Mention Me feat Meccalicious (prod. Pete Rock). Official story from the kids at Foundation is that this was recorded back in the mid 90s, heart and just recently resurfaced. I don’t know what this says about rap music, but anyway it’s a nice cut.

Guru - State of Clarity feat Common. Off the upcoming Jazzmatazz Volume 4 The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future. Does the sample on this one remind anybody else of Taxi? myspace.com/guru7grand.

Beautiful Mindz – Poet Past The Weak. Dudley Perkins is one of the spaciest people alive. The BeautifulMindz record (consisting of Georgia Anne Muldrow, Dudley Perkins, and the UK’s own 2Tall) is ridiculous. Seriously. This spent a good two weeks in my car. This record has my official endorsement. Go buy it, or if you need further encouragement, wait until Soultronica Volume 5, when you’ll hear more snippets. myspace.com/jim2tall

bump – Phat Kat – Nasty Ain’t It (prod. J Dilla)

Count Bass D – Jamaicans Get Down. Like some tossed together joint. The balance on this is perfect though. Feel free to rewind this one a few times. myspace.com/countbassd

Bonus Track – Keith Murray – Nobody Does It Better. This treads dangerously close to the R&B line, but the angry, bitter ranting coupled with the smooth crooning makes this one a winner. myspace.com/keithmurray.

MIXTAPE 75 – BACKPACKER / SUMMER IN LA!

Hell yeah. It’s summer, therapist and you know what that means: pool parties, approved less clothing, see and college rap music. There is definitely a Los Angeles sound within the college rap/backpacker rap subgenre – if you’re into categorization – and this show is all about that. Giant Panda – One Time. I remember being really excited about this release when I got it a couple years back, and for good reason – it’s hot. I actually was supposed to catch them at a quasi-legal show under a bridge in some weird back alley somewhere in LA, but there was sound trouble and one of the neighbors snitched, so the promoters moved it to a club and what do you know, I was all like 19 and stuff and it was 21+. So I went home. Dope record though. myspace.com/giantpanda.

Aesthetics Crew – LA Opinion. LUKE SON WHAT IT IS. I met Luke, one of the members of AC back what, two years ago?, and he told me that he was in this rap group called Aesthetics. He never let me hear any of it, but I kept hearing about them, and seeing stickers on freeway onramps. Like 1.5 years later, dude decides to send me a couple LPs and the CDs and what do you know, it’s nice. Last I heard they were working on some new material. People Under The Stairs – Eat Street. Even if you don’t like rap music, this pretty much lays some of the more infamous food joints in the LA, on some tourguide status. The Roscoe’s was an obvious, but I must say I prefer their waffles. Gus Jr also gets the stamp of approval. Crown City Rockers – B-Boy Remix (feat Planet Asia, Zion I, The Grouch, Chali 2na, and Mystic). In a scene full of me-too groups that are trying to do this whole live instrumental hip-hop thing, Crown City Rockers stand out as one of the few groups that take it beyond gimmicks and really put some soul into the art form. Plus they’re nice people. I first met them at a show we threw at UCR back when I was still doing that stuff, and they basically did the damn thing. And all you producers should definitely take a look at their site, where they’ve uploaded all of the acapellas for Earthtones – for free.
